Oh okay so that guy works directly for the league then and it isn't just opinion?

This is what will happen. The Devils will re-work the contract, the Rangers won't trade us Gaborik, and once again all this speculation will be just that.

Regardless of what happens, there WILL be a fine, and that fine amount will also count against their cap. Minimum $1m.

But it gives us a few more weeks of sleepless nights followed by disappointment and by the time all this crap is over, the season will be here!

Says who? Even if it goes that far, the rules state that the commissioner "MAY" fine blah, blah, blah....

i know i am late to the conversation. but this is how I've been thinking about this except i don't think DL is colluding with Lou to make it easier for the devils to sign kovalchuk. i think DL publicized their offer for a number of other reasons. lou is using this as an opportunity to 1) give kovalchuk the offer that he wanted, and 2) with the help of the nhl modify the contract to suit their ends. i said this before when talking about his ability to sign kovalchuk and stay under the cap, but lamoriello seems to always be able to get what he wants in the end.

Not necessarily. The rule states that the commish may institute a fine, the minimum of which must be $1MM. Bettman will likely waive the fine.
