Now that this has happened, I find it awfully convenient that the NHL waited until after the press conference (and after Lou basically cleared his conscience) to say "no deal".
Lou is told by ownership to make it happen, structures a contract he's clearly not happy with, announces the deal, gets Dean Lombardi to make his "best and final" offer details public, says publicly that he believes that the deal shouldn't be allowed by the NHL, the NHL rejects the deal, Lou renegotiates a contract slightly more favorable than LA's terms that the NHL will OK, and Kovalchuk accepts it.
Chew on that.
