Can you really blame him for taking the money? If you take out the retirement years we're looking at a 10 year $96M contract vs. the Kings offer which was not as front loaded so maybe $65M for the 1st 10 years. (a little more or less depending if the term was 13 or 15 years)
I know it's hard to think in terms of these large multi-million dollar numbers but if you were offered a 50% pay raise to go live and work in NJ for 10 years (until you retire) would you do it? It might be a tough decision but I'd probably go.

Can anyone summarize all these radio discussions. No audio at work. Thanks.

From the Devils stand point it would be difficult to negotiate a new deal with Kovalchuk when you are unsure what your cap is going to be next season. If the Devils are fined it will count against their cap for next year. The fine could be anywhere from $1million to $5million. A renegotiated deal would probably mean a larger cap hit anyway and when you add the fine (if any) how do they move forward until the current situation is resolved?
A high ranking NHL official told Sportsnet he does not expect a major fight over rejecting the Kovalchuk contract.

Interesting. I think it would be hard arguement to win.
How would Lou and Jay be able to explain the last 6 years of this contract? The $ is way under what other "retirement" contracts are written at. All the Devils fans on HF claim that he wanted a front loaded contract with all the money up front. Well, then how do they explain the 1st 2 years at $6M per. This contract just reeks of circumvention.
