As someone who doesn't have the first bit of legal experience, it still would seem that as important as this decision will be for all involved, the arbitrator will want to take his time to make absolutely, positively, 100% sure that he reaches the correct decision. I'm happy to wait until Monday for that.
I hope you are right. My concern is simply the fact that contracts and written agreements need to be airtight in their language, otherwise loopholes arise. These loopholes are legal as they are not specifically covered in said contract/agreement.
The fact that this contract blatantly attempts to circumvent the cap isn't enough. There has to be specific wording in the CBA as to WHY what New Jersey did was illegal, and from what I've read, there isn't. But I haven't read every nook and cranny of the CBA, nor am I a lawyer, so I could be off base.

kovy might have character issues, but personally i feel that he didn't reveal any by spurning us and signing with NJ. he chose a solid team with a history of winning and the money; you and i would probably do the same.
so why would anyone that wanted him before not want him now? because of his statements he made? please... they were straight out of the professional athlete's cliche handbook.
maybe we just dont want to let hope creep back in so we dont get hurt.
how do you say...
KING KOVY!!!

It's not just about wording of the CBA. A legal contract has to be made with the intent of completing the contract. In this case I think both parties have no intention of seeing the contract to completion. Therefore the contract is void. That is the only legal recourse I see for the NHL and the right ruling in this case.
Agree. Personally, I still think Kovy is "plan A" in DL's playbook. I think that the Arbitrator will void the contract and Kovy will be a UFA again, and the Kings most definitely will attempt to sign him still.
I can't see New Jersey being able to sign him if this contract is voided and the 2 options left (if reports *cough* "Rumors" are true) then it would be between LA and the KHL.
The Ponikarovsky signing has zero impact on whether an offer is made to Kovalchuk or not because that deal is only for 1 year. The only impact I can see it having an effect on is Kovy + Poni, does that give the Kings enough cap space to seek out a defensemen this year and flexibility to add a player (if needed) at the deadline?
I say, had all interested party's (Kings&NJ) played by the rules Kovalchuk would have been a King by now. It was clear that he came here to personally to try to make a deal in the final days of kovalchukgate and that he was interested in playing here. It seems the only (speculated) advantage that NJ had was the dollar amount per year that we didn't. We only later, found out(later than Kovy,Grossman, and Lou) that the only reason NJ was able to offer up more money than us was because they were circumventing the salary cap.The same salary cap that kept our offer down
So what changed? ..about Kovalchuk's desire to play here now that the money is going to probably be a push. When NJ makes a new offer, the Kings will have the same oppertunity to make him an offer as well. Neither one will be for as much as the one that is now going to be ruled in favor of being voided(imho.) Unless lou wants to get stupid and offer up more cap space to kovy despite the fact that the cap hit for the current(disputed contract) already makes NJ over the limit. Plus, the league could put a 1 to 5 million cap penalty on NJ when this is all over which would make it even crazier to sign kovy again. they would have to increase his cap hit from the one that as it is puts them over the cap and absorb 1 to 5 million in cap space on top of that.
DL said he is still interested and Kovalchuk (in my assumption) wanted to play here more but couldn't refuse the 20 million or so more that NJ offered.
So why not?
this is all assuming that the contract will remain voided after the arbitration decision, btw.

I still think that is why DL hasn't pulled the trigger on any significant moves.
