This fact is quite salient and I'm not sure why this contract has been brought into the discussion at all. One of the big factors that was looked at was the ability for IK to retire or be sent down in those final years so as to reduce New Jersey's Cap.
Philadelphia has no such option as it pertains to Pronger.
LGK Log- Day 42
Wife and kids still gone, fear the worst for the dog. Good news though, the relief agency known as Rite-Aid dropped of a care package, fells good to brush my teeth again! The thread never ceases to amaze! Some of the members of LGK are upset about one of their own. This poster goes by the name of CBGB, but carries many other monikers. Apparently he is a minion of the mystic known as Poo Slinger, his words burn the eyes of impressionable LGKers. Have been amused at some of his writings but the ones known as The Mods have fear he speaks of things he knows not. Another interesting development has been watching some of the members speak in the language of analogies. There must be different eastern and western dialects because they cannot get their points across, (have since translated and have learned much on how to circumvent a cap and what not to do). Think I may have been spotted behind my BS-O-Meter blind. Have decided to wear a disguise instead to watch what happens next! This one is perfect!

Everyone keeps bringing up Pronger'5 SPC saying that it doesn't matter because the cap hit will still stay on the books. The truth of the matter is that it does. Those last two years were added for the sole purpose of lowering the cap hit. There is no intent for Pronger to play those years. Those years do however lower the cap by x amount of dollars. Pronger's cap hit should be much higher.

It's still cap circumvention no matter how it is twisted. The last two years of the SPC were aaded for the sole purpose of lowering the overall cap hit. If, however, the last two years were in the neihborhood of 1-1.5M then that would be more indicitive of a players salary with Pronger's age and stature.

I know this is splitting hairs but it's not cap circumvention, as much as it's cap redistribution. They're taking the pain of today and moving it a few years down the road. The difference is that the Hawks and Devils (and maybe Canucks) are trying to avoid that cap pain altogether.
It's simply front-loading a contract and it's really no different if they pay him $550K or $2M in the last year. They're overpaying him now and underpaying him later...but the overall cap hit during the life of the contract is the same - which is NOT the case with the Kovalchuk and Hossa contracts (and possibly the Luongo contract), unless someone believes they all expect to be playing at the end of their contracts.
Pronger really is a different situation because the Flyers WILL feel the pain of this contract - it just won't be until after he retires.
Swing Low (Sweet Soviet) - to the tune of...well...Swing Low
