I fail to recall the exact details, but the last time there was threat of a lockout/strike, he made a comment, publicly, about not being able to feed his dogs if he didn't get paid. It stuck because, you know, he was already a multi-millionaire at the time.

I feel that I should note, though, that I was a huge fan of his for a very long time and think he might just be the best US born player of hockey in my lifetime. And his retiring makes me feel old.

Modano was an amazing player to watch, especially seeing his jersey flapping in the breeze. I never understood why it was just Modano's jersey that did that though. He is the greatest American player of all time. I hear he will be working as a broadcaster this season, so we might get to still see him.
