at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

He got ruined by Toronto. They should have seasoned him with the Marlies but they bought into their own hype and kept him with the big club figuring he was the be-all-end-all. What he needed was a Bernier-esque level of seasoning and progression and instead he got thrown to the wolves of the Maple Leaf hype machine. Even now they talk about Scrivens as the next great goalie and Reimer is already a has-been to some. They'll never learn.
And there's also some debate that Allaire and his rumored rigid instruction aided in destroying a goalie who seemed to have all the tools to be more than a cookie-cutter drop-and-block robot goalie.
