Great player and a great person. Not a bad thing I could think to say about the guy other than he played for Detroit. I never saw Bobby Orr play, but I can say, with confidence, that he was the best D-man I've ever seen play.
Happy retirement Nic

Doug Harvey should be mentioned among the greats as well.

One classy MoFo that Swede. However, also responsible for one of my more heart-breaking moments:

As smooth and graceful a defenceman as I have ever seen. The way he controlled the game from the backend was stunning. His quality on the ice may only be surpassed by his demeanor and reputation off-ice. He will be missed.
Wish him the best in his future endeavors.

It's speculated that Tomas Holmstrom will soon announce his retirement as well.
This makes me a little sad, he really was one of the best players and captains of all time.
It's tough to say he's the best defensman ever since Orr could very well be the greatest PLAYER ever. Tough call on that.
Regardless...class act all the way. The league will miss him...I hope he sticks around in coaching or whatever.

Has he not looked as good this year or something? Seems like every time I saw him play this season, he still looked great. I get that he's getting older, but when he can still play like that, it sucks to see him call it quits.
He's looked great all this season. Still that powerful skating and passing to forwards. I'm really surprised he will retire and like was said, if he retires, I'm sure Holmstrom will retire also. He's another one they'll miss a lot. His presence in front of the nets have had a huge toll on his body soo........Wings in for some huge changes. They lost long time player Kris Draper last year and just hate seeing all these great players leaving. I know a lot of King fans hate the Wings but, I've never been one of them. Respect and Admiration for pure talent.
Don't do it Nicklas Lidstrom!
I think the trouble he had recovering from the ankle problem this year, and that told him that it was time.
very lucky to have seen two players in Lidstrom and Yzerman play their entire careers and to do it with one team in an era where so many players move around so much especially with free agency and what not.
Lidstrom's character was top notch.
His presser is on right now on the NHL channel.
