    Default Nick Lidstrom retires

Nicklas Lidstrom is apparently ready to talk about his future—and Detroit Red Wings fans might not like what they hear.

The Red Wings scheduled a press conference for Thursday at 11 a.m., which will be attended by Lidstrom and general manager Ken Holland. It's a virtual certainty that the 42-year-old Lidstrom will announce whether he plans to return for a 21st season.

Sure sounds like Lidstrom is retiring. Holland won't confirm. Says Lidstrom has earned the right to make his announcement tomorrow.

First Ballot Hall of Famer. The Perfect Human being.

Start the arguments about him being the best defenseman EVER to play the game, and yes I know about Bobby Orr.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

It's sad to see another long time favorite leaving. Can only say that he's been as inportant to the Wings as Orr was to the Bruins. Difference being, Orr didn't last as long because of those knees of his.

Nothing anyone can really say about this guy. He is just everything you want as a player/teammate/person.

Class, skill, heart and longevity rarely so perfectly combine like they have for Lids.

    Really going to miss him.

I really thought he might stick around for one more year. The guy is still in great condition, has tons of skill, and thinks the game as good as anyone. He'll be missed on the ice, but you know he's already fielding hundreds of calls for coaching and management jobs.

Also, Detroit is now in the market for a big fat free agent defenseman.

Have you ever guessed somebody's gender wrong? There's no recovering from that. You just gotta move on, cause you ain't wriggling outta nothin'.
    "Hey, excuse me, sir?"
    "Maam."
"Okay." "Okay, bye... bye, human. Bye person. Nice to meet you, individual."

The best defenceman to ever play the game IMO, and yes, I know who Bobby Orr is.

Looks like he is going to go out while still very capable of playing at a high level. Obviously the level he feels he needs to be at i much higher than most players. All class, tons of skill and a genuinely nice guy. That said, I'm glad we will never have to face him again!

Congrats to him on a great career. He and Orr are the greatest D-Men of all time and although it'll be easier to go against the Wings with him gone, it's never fun to see Legends leave the league.

Scheduling a press conference would strongly hint retirement since you don't schedule one for no reason just to say, "I'm back".

All class Lidstrom is. If only he wasn't a friggin Red Wing.

Curious timing, right as the SCF is getting ready to start. Still, first ballot HOF'er all the way. Game's greatest defensemen? Only Bobby Orr and maybe Ray Bourque could mount serious, credible arguments.
