It's more about the sports betting, as to why casinos wouldn't want them here. Football and baseball are big time for sports betting, and leagues would not allow betting on those teams. Not too sure about the Maloofs situation, if betting is allowed on their team in their casino or not, but that's another story.
As for the LV fan base, I always thought that a good chunk of the population in this town work the swing or grave shifts, so even if the population may be right, many targetted fans can't/won't attend games anyway.
Another reason is that there are probably only 3 or 4 rinks in town that I know of, so the interest isn't there. Everyone here is about football. Football Sunday and Monday Night Football are huge draws for all the casinos. If the NHL was able to create a weekly interest like that would be big.
Anyone I talk to frowns or goes "Oh yeah..." when I mention hockey, so there are VERY few that I can hold a regular conversation with about hockey.
If anyone was serious about bringing an NHL team to LV, they would need a very patient plan. You see, no one cares about hockey, because it wasn't or isn't a part of their lives. You'd have to do it from the grass roots level by building more rinks and give it about 15 years before even entertaining the idea of bringing an NHL team here. Build them as close as possible to high schools, or at least close to many of the communities around town. Hockey would need heavy local support.
I think the same problem is in PHX, even though they have done ok from their grass roots level, but they also do have a bigger population. LV would have to start grass roots first before any team shows up, to see any kind of success IMO.
