You could argue the same about Gerry Cheevers as well. I dont think it's fair to knock a guy who played on a good team for most of his career. People don't do it to Roy or Brodeur or Fuhr or Dryden, but Osgood always get's hammered for that (even by people in Detroit).

If you had to put together a team to win a single game and your life depended on it would you ever consider going with Chris Osgood?

Roy, Brodeur and Dryden all had seasons or playoffs where they were undeniably responsible for (or at least a large portion of) the success of their team.

Chris Osgood had one really good statistical season late in his career and one really good statistical season early in his career and the rest of it he was invisibly racking up stats on the best team in the league.

Gotta disagree Doc. He is NOT a FIRST Ballot netminder like some. However, I think he eventually goes in the hall. 3 Cups with the Wings, 400 wins that says something. Of course you can argue he had one of the best defensemen ever in front of him and a talented squad with him, but hey he stopped the puck. Also, HE FOUGHT ROY!!! (though he did get pummeled)

There are two guys who I would do that with. There are more than two goalies in the Hall of Fame. Further, Mike Babcock thought enough of him to pull Hasek in the playoffs. He was rewarded by Osgood leading them to the cup that year. That says something in its own right.

Yea... pulling a 42 year old goalie who started the playoffs weakly sure was a gutsy move.

How many shots was he facing during those playoffs? 22 a game? Lowest in the league?

It says something alright... he had a really good postseason while playing behind a phenomenal team.

I'm just sayin let's get rid of other guys like Cheevers and Giacomin if you're going to keep Osgood out.

Also, the shot at Hasek is pretty weak. The guy was still playing pretty damn well that year and had an exceptional playoff the year before as well. It DID take guts to pull him that year. The fact that Osgood stepped up and carried them to the finals behind an exceptional team when Hasek couldn't speaks to his ability to do exactly what you said he never did.

Probably my favorite Chris Osgood memory:

The same argument could be made for/against a ton of HOF'rs. I am not arguing that Osgood was set up to succeed, but the numbers are really what the HOF looks at. And there have been plenty of situations where a great team has been done in by bad goaltending. It's a combination. The long career, the stats...you Kings fans just have an(understandable) hatred for Os-good. Don't let that cloud your judgement.
