What status quo? You mean status quo like trading for Mike Richards?

Look around the times they are a changing and the Kings are in a position to win a division title this season and become a much more attractive desitination for UFAs.

If the Kings could have found room for the other Richards this season, they can certainly find room for Parise next season with Stoll and Penner's contracts expiring at the end of the season.

Yeah, something about the situation as a whole just has me thinking that Parise is weighing all of his options and that Lou doesn't have him sold on the idea of being a Devil for life just yet.

I didn't say the Kings couldn't afford him. I said he isn't going anywhere.

Maybe, but NJ and Lou aren't what they used to be.

The cons outweigh the pros for the Devils. Yes, the Devils benefit by seeing how he plays this season coming off a major injury and possibly taking a pay cut, but the risk is even bigger since he can become a free agent next season and the Devils will not receive any compensation if he walks.

This one year deal gives time to see how Parise performs after the injury (for all camps). I guess we'll see what happens...

Just because they set the bar so high from 1995-2003.

    This is interesting

Parise: One-year contract “best-case scenario for this situation”

Calling it the “best-case scenario” considering the circumstances, Devils left wing Zach Parise said he’s pleased with the one-year, $6 million contract the sides agreed upon today to avoid Wednesday’s scheduled salary arbitration hearing in Toronto.

Parise earned $5 million in 2010-11.

“This was the best-case scenario for this situation,” said Parise, who went out for a belated birthday celebration with his parents tonight. “This is what we agreed upon. Everybody was very professional about the way it was handled.”

Both Parise and Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello stated previously that they had hoped to sign a long-term contact, but were unable to do that before Wednesday’s hearing, which would have resulted in a one-year award anyway. Parise, who turned 27 Thursday, would not discuss how far apart the sides were on a long-term agreement.

“I don’t want to get into too much about what we talked about,” he said. “For right now, this is what we agreed upon. I’m happy about it and I’m excited about it and looking forward to the season.”

The biggest positive was avoiding an arbitration hearing, which sometimes can create bad feelings.

“I think everybody was happy about that,” Parise said of avoiding the arbitration hearing. “That’s not something anybody wanted.”

Still, Parise remains eligible to leave the Devils as an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2012. If he remains healthy, the two-time Devils’ MVP and 2010 U.S. Olympic hero potentially would be the most sought after UFA on the 2012 market.

“I’m not even thinking about that right now,” said Parise, who missed all but one of the last 70 games in 2010-11 after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. “We’re going to just go forward from here. I’m happy with it and they say they’re happy with it, too.”

Parise confirmed that his agent, Wade Arnott, plans to continue talking with the Devils and the goal still is to sign a long-term extension with the Devils that begins after the upcoming season. (He can’t officially sign until Jan. 1, 2012.)

“That’s what we talked about, to continue talking (about a long-term contract),” Parise said. “That’s the ultimate goal.”

Parise doesn’t expect anything to happen before the 2011-12 season begins, but said he’d be willing to talk before then if the Devils want to. He’d also be willing to negotiate during the season.

“I assume so,” he said. “I know Lou has his beliefs about not doing that during the season, but we’ll see what happens.”

SO this is a killer to me. Because next year NJ has a similar pay roll to this year and a wealth of RFAs to sign including Mark Fraser, Matt Corrente, Nick Palmieri, Mark Fayne, Zharkov, and Taormina.

I feel like if NJ is turning south in about...December, Parise might be gone.

Actually, even w/$3 million of Rolston's money gone, the Devils shed a lot of salary next off season. And with the exception of (maybe) Palmieri, none of those names are big ticket items. Fayne, Tao, and Fraser will probably not even be everyday players this year. I expect they will share a spot or 2 thru rotation. With Larsson probably making the team next season it should be pretty easy to lose one or 2 of them. And Zharkov, who is going to want a very good defensive forward with hands of stone? But yeah...I think Parise may be gone at the deadline regardless of the shape my boys are in.
