What? No post about Dean Lombardi asleep at the wheel?
Amazing what winning the Cup does.![]()
While I would be very happy to see the popularity of hockey rise and drive revenues higher, I'm getting a feeling in my gut that $90M is probably going to be the eventual upper end of the salary cap, and more likely it's going to max out at a lower figure. I'm still worried that we're headed for a severe global economic downturn in the next ten years.
I'm not happy that another Western conference team is now suddenly a playoff contender. But I don't hate Minnesota for some reason. They're not a Cup contender though, and they don't have much cap space to be one. The good thing about these signings is that at least it wasn't Detroit or Pittsburgh. And the Northwest isn't going to roll over for Vancouver anymore.
I'm happy for Wild fans, but wow...crazy contracts. They definitely became a better team which will make the Northwest more interesting if they can stay healthy next season.
I haven't looked at the deals, but just basing my opinion on 2 13 year, just shy of 100 million contracts, how in the **** is that not being looked at for cap circumvention? Whatever, Zach wanted to go to Minny, wasn't nothing Lou could do to change that. Lot of pressure to be 'the guy' for a player who really hasn't had to do the heavy lifting and when he has, not exactly a difference maker. With Henrique coming up and a few other possible pieces in waiting it won't be as hard to replace ZP as you might think. Now you know why the Devils signed Kovy...we were pretty sure 2 years ago that Zach was likely to leave. But of course there will no doubt be the endless one begat the other speculation which just isn't fair. Good luck Zach, when the fans get sick of waiting for you to bring them instant success and you start getting tired of your wife...well, my Devils will have moved on. Good luck, and thank you for not signing in the Eastern conference.
Ok, so I'll answer. First off, of the players...Bergfors is no longer in the league, Cormier was a head case/troubled and Lou was going to get rid of him anyway, leaving Oduya...a solid 3rd/4th line d with flashes of offense but also lapses on defense. No great loss.
The pick swap...negligible.
All the fines/pick forfeiting is a bunch of bull**** imo. More heaping on by the little dictator while Luongo/the glass goalie on the Island/and now these twin 13 year deals just get forgotten, says more about Bettman than it does about Lou.
And yeah, Kovy's cap hit is lower than Parise's(and we as fans knew 2 years ago he probably wasn't going to stay so it's apples/oranges)
How do we feel? Well, I would say that I feel great that we didn't overpay for Zach Parise. I am glad that we signed, in Kovy, a great team guy who WANTED to be a Devil. I respect ZP for not signing in the East, and I wish him well. I think he and a lot of you are going to find out that he is more of a secondary player and he is going to struggle with carrying the load on a team that has severly handcuffed themselves as far as stocking up with other talent. I think the Devils will move on, as they always have. You do remember the run they made 2 seasons ago after getting buried under a bad start...that was done without Parise. Also without Henrique.
That satisfy you?
Oh, and in the worst kept bromance secret ever...watch for Jamie Langenbrunner to sign a 1 million or so 1 year deal with Minny any day now.
