You have got to be ****ing kidding me!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S IT!?!?!
If we all had to go through this entire months long bull**** for the NHL to agree to THAT, I'm going to be PISSED!!!!
EDIT before someone says it: I know this has not been confirmed yet. I'm just sayin'.
"Under first Kovalchuk contract cap hit first 13 years would have been $7.68 million. Cap hit for final four years, $550,000."

I guess I just take offense to the folks actively wishing ill towards my team. If the shoe had been on the other foot I would have been happy for the Kings and would have been looking forward to watching him 'play for la'. I am defensive of my team as you all would be, well most of you anyway. That's all.

And that's it for this part of the discussion.
Point taken to an extent...but there comes a point this is just greed...there was a time when players played for the love of the game, not because it was job or because of the money, they played for pride for a drive to win and be great. Not so they could make an extra 20 mil to hypothetically give 1mil to 20 different family members. A wise man once told me that if give people things they will never learn how to earn it. Im not saying the guy shouldn't try to get the most money he can, but there's a point where there is just too much money being thrown around, than human being knows what to do with it.
If he wants to make sure his family is set for life, that's great, but my value system, doesn't agree with childeren just having things handed to them just because it's there. Im not going to sit here and try and inflict my value system on others. There does come a time where too much is too much, and that's what leads to problems.
For the record, im not just talking about IK here, this is going on in all sports, and the part I take most offense to, is the fact that there are people lossing jobs in this country left and right, and people working their asses off just to barely get by, and then you have pro athletes bitching about earning an extra, what equates in this case to 1.5 mil a year, when they are making 8, 9, 10 mil a year anyways. The part that bugs me is these athletes have a gift that 98% of the population don't have, and they all get paid to do something they love, and to bitch about 1-2 million dollar a year, when your making a ton of money to begin with to me is just asenine.
Back to the NHL, this is a league that in 04-05 lost a season to lock out, becuase the owners had to be saved from them selves, they demanded cost certainty, not to pick on the Devils, but what's going to happen if the Devils fail to make the playoffs, and attendance drops, and Vandeerbek starts lossing money, their going to get some of their losses back through revenue sharing, so some of these owners are getting bailed out for shelling out big bucks now, eventually these cost are going to be passes on to the fans, whether it's beer going up, food going up, ticket prices ect....that's why I take exception to these large contracts.

I feel you, but I'll ask you this...how would you feel if it were the Rangers, or a team you're not a fan of, doing something like this? Would you feel any different? How would feel if the league rejected the new contract and IK went on to sign a 1 year deal with the Rangers for 11 mil a year?

I can understand that, but when you realize that Grossman basically used the Kings as a pawn to extort more money from the Devils, perhaps you can begin to understand some of our ill will. With all that under the bridge, good luck with Kovi. I really do wonder if any of this will take it's toll in the lockerroom now and for years to come.
After this fiasco, I'm glad he's not coming here. I wanted him on the Kings badly, but the whole ordeal left a bad taste in my mouth.
There is probably a provison for giving greater cap weight to the highest 5 years in the contract or something like that.
EDIT: Oh no there isn't. It's just the average up until age 40.
