I five years time, after having to surround their $100m man with AHL players and KHL rejects (because that's all they will be able to afford to surround him with), they will be BEGGING on their KNEES to trade him.

Can you imagine the Kings having to potentially sacrifice Kopitar or Doughty to fit money man under cap?

ouch!

I wish they would have been able to give them a cap penalty as well, that would have been priceless.

1. Cost to trade

• Niclas Bergfors - 1st round (23rd overall) in 2005.
• Johnny Oduya - UFA signing 2006
• Patrice Cormier - 2nd round (54th overall) in 2008
• 1st-round draft pick in 2010
• Moved up 16 spots on 2nd-round swap of picks with ATL

2. Additional Cost to Organization

• $3M fine = Additional salary to be shed* (makes Kovalchuk's de facto cost $9M for 2010)
• 3rd-round draft pick forfeit in the 2011
• 1st-round draft pick forfeit in 1 of the next 4 years
• Loss of leverage in near future salary shedding trades
• Potential future loss of significant player (Parise/Zajac?)
• Severe budget constraints* for years 3-8 of contract (Avg $9.66M per year)

In addtion to their chosen Franchise player The Devils also walk away with Anssi Salmela.

Sucks to be the Devils right now but that's what you get when you try to drive a Brink's truck through the loophole.



* Based on assumption club has some sort of internal annual operating budget based on revenue.
