its all speculation, sir. that could be the truth, or it could be a guy who is the captain of a team and older/wiser wanting to play down a question being given to him by media looking for dish. what does it benefit him to make controversy by saying anything more?

    this thread needs more lunchy.

who me? i had nothing to say that would change anyone's mind about him. it's no surprise to me he got waived. after their acquisitions, there wasn't any room for him on the rangers this year. he was battling for a spot against christensen and kind of got screwed by getting injured and having to leave 2 separate preseason games. the first of which where he went down to block a shot and a slapper got him in the foot. his toe nail got ripped off. nice, huh? the second game, during one of the european exhibition games, he took a skate to the face. as has been said by the more rational people, he can play well and knows how to battle. i mean, people whine about what a turtle he is, but he's not a fighter or an enforcer. he's an agitator. his primary role is to piss guys off, get them off their game and draw penalties. that game where simmonds allegedly called him the other f-word, people say he turtled, but hey, when he turned away from simmonds, who ended up in the penalty box? not avery. who was on the PP? not philly. with all that said, i do agree he can be a total ass. i don't care though, in an already well established locker room, he's fine. unfortunately for him, there aren't too many places like the rangers. best of luck to him wherever he ends up.

There is only one mention of face (eye) guarding. At the bottom of page 41 it states that...

"Eye guarding (placing a hand in front of the opponent’s eyes when guarding from the rear) a player who does not have possession of the ball is illegal and an unsportsmanlike technical shall be assessed."

So, it's o.k. to do it when you are guarding someone's shot, but if you play peek-a-boo from behind on the person you are guarding, it's illegal (and also pretty freakin' weird).

In college and high school it IS illegal. Here's what's in the NCAA basketball rule book ( http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules/20...ball_rules.pdf ) on page 142 (Section 7; Article4):
Direct Technical Fouls for Unsportsmanlike Player Conduct
"Purposely obstructing an opponent’s vision by waving or placing hand(s) near his or her eyes."

it was a chicken**** move by Avery, totally unsportsmanlike, and you can tell how chicken**** it was because no one else had done it before the instigator rule was around. you do something stupid like that, you deserve to get your ass beat.
Disagree. I don't care what the rules are in other sports. Bodychecking is also not allowed in basketball. The point of standing in front of the net is to screen the goalie. Who cares what direction you're facing. And if you want to talk sportsmanship, I don't think trash talking and calling other players f*** is necessarily sportsmanlike.

After that single play, yes. Did you keep watching, though? Later Avery took a hit from Simmonds that he didn't like, and when he went to the bench he said something to the ref and got two minutes for it. Trust me - Sean Avery has cost his team far more than he's ever earned for them. I still think it's unprecidented that, as a Canadian hockey player, he's the only Canadian that gets booed in every Canadian NHL arena.

I also wonder how much Richards had to play in all of this.

honestly, i missed it because i have a toddler to watch. i still stand by my statement though that on a team similar to the rangers, he's more helpful than not. people that dislike him are bound to disagree. even if the sentiment is unprecEdented in canada.

it's not so much richards (although he does indeed eat up a roster space), but that players who were on the bubble last year (christensen, wolski and zuccarello) all made the team this year and avery got edged out. c'est la vie. obviously, richards is a great addition to the team, but i'm not sure how the last 3 will do for NY. i'm not taking anything away from those players, they obviously earned their way onto the team in the preseason and during camp, but 2 of them are inconsistent and the other one is attempting to play his first full season in the big leagues. having to face teams like philly and the pens' matt cooke, the rangers might miss having a pest who can score from time to time, they might not.
