The NHL is making noise about going back to 4 divisions and 2 conferences.
We could see a return to the day where the top 4 teams in each division make the playoffs with divisional playoffs followed by a conference championship series.

Wait.... this is darby's plan isn't it?
It's similar. Although the plan I had was a baseball style overlap system where cities with more than one team would have each team in a separate conference. It made all teams travel the same distances, which means the divisions were all spread out.
But mostly it was a plan to f*** with Doc and his ridiculous North/South conferences. I mean, lookit the geography in that image. The southernmost team in the morth is, like, Philly.

It's genius. You just can't see it yet.But mostly it was a plan to f*** with Doc and his ridiculous North/South conferences. I mean, lookit the geography in that image. The southernmost team in the morth is, like, Philly.

There is NO WAY that the realignment is gonna be this earth shattering. It'll be, at best, a minor tinkering and it will, almost certainly, still have flaws. No doubt when Phoenix/Islanders move to Kansas City/Las Vegas/Seattle, it will give the league another chance to get it right...which they won't. Give up your mad pipe dreams of things making sense you foolish fools.![]()
Bring back total chaos. Look at the madness of the Norris Division!
Plug in San Jose for California, then throw darts at the names of new teams to fill up the divisions.

That would be Unfortunate. I hated it the 80s and the early 90s. To me, it is UNFAIR as this just means more teams that deserve to be in the playoffs miss out because they are in a division with better teams. It's sort of like going by conference but not as confining. The real way to do it is put all the teams in ONE league and have the top 16 make it...but since that is bad for travel the conference way, like they go now, is best.
What way the put the teams for the regular season I don't really care....whatever works for the league is fine by me.
