If the right trades can't fall into place at the draft, the Sedins are definitely Plan A in terms of Free Agency. Actually, Sedins or bust. Gab, Hossa, whoever else in FA will do jack for us in the long run. Here, you get 2 players that are durable, reliable and complement each other. They are completely out of their gourds because they should be asking for more, $5.25 is nothing for their caliber. It would be a good deal at $6.5 cap hit.
This is the type of deal that needs to be done for Frolov. Not the $$$, but the front loading and the years. Should have done it for Kopitar, at least a lesser, shorter contract to set up a deal like this for him. In terms of right now, a $6.8 cap hit is too much- could've had one right now for $4 million.
This is how it will be done until the next CBA. The Kings, or AEG need to adapt. Please, don't let us be the last team to adapt- The Lightning, ran by idiots have adapted. Vinny's deal works the exact same way.
I believe this is pure cap circumvention, but who cares? The CBA doesn't say you can't do this. The only thing WE should be concerned about is that the Red Wings thought of this, not the Kings. Did DL not hire a capologist 3 years ago? He needs a new one if he did.

I'm on!
I understand that they are likely to not finish the entire 12 years, but who's to say they won't change their minds and want to stay in North America? It's still very possible that we'd pay two 40 year olds way more than what they should be making because they are technically under contract. I'm not at all a fan of these long term deals. That's not to say that I wouldn't want the 28 year old versions.
when did either Zetterberg or Franzen even mention the thought of returning to Sweden to finish their careers?
Heckyll and Jekyll have mentioned the idea more than once over the last few years, which allows for the assumption that it's more than just an idea, but rather their intention.
I thought "CAP circumvention" is also the case with players retiring 2 or 3 years before the contract runs out. Therefore I see no difference in these contracts. And I also thought freedom to talk applies in USA&Canada, too. They can say whatever they want, NHL just can't go out and say "aaah, but, you see, you two said you will be returning to Sweden! Therefore you can't sign these contracts."
Management has to be prepared to bury them in the minors the second they become ineffective and won't leave. You pay them the rest of there contract, and remove the cap hit.
Also you can't give them an NMC. An NMC on a long term contracts like these would be beyond stupid.
