And yet the NHL said no to Kovalchuk's original deal after the Devils were warned about submitting it. I was shocked!

Ok I think we are both agreeing then that if Nashville matches Weber gets a NMC as offered by Philly in the offer sheet, it would kick in July 1st of 2013 at the same time of the expiration of the 1 year ban on trading a player that signs an RFA contract. Right?

I don't think so. Nashville is the prior team, so they would have to agree to the NTC. The only thing they HAVE to match is the money.

Maybe someone will write about this aspect of it in the next few days to clear it up. It really only becomes an issue if Nashville matches. We will know soon enough.

I see what your saying, the all, and part of the contract requirements is confusing but I could see reading it as they could agree to a NMC. It doesn't really address the question directly but seeing as a NMC is pretty much one of the only other things they can negotiate it would seem implied as not required.

Apparently Weber met with a few teams before signing the offer sheet with Philly.

The Fourth Period :: Nashville Predators :: Weber met with other teams

According to the Nashville Tennessean, Weber met with the New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks to discuss a deal with those clubs.
Just saw this all over Twitter:

Weber's agent : signing with Philly was a signal that he wants to leave Nashville.
    Ah Duh!

Seems about right for the league.
I knew I liked this guy...

But that's really about the best breakdown of this I have read. The Devils were punished for pointing out flaws in the CBA. PERIOD. And yes, you can do a lot w/graphs, like the Bible they can be skewed to rationalize any argument. But the fact of the matter is that the Flyers used the blueprint that the NHL laid out...after the Kovy situation to get justupto the line. The right thing to do, which will never happen, is for Bettman to forgive the forfeited pick. I'd imagine the Devils could maybe look into a lawsuit(someone who knows want to speak upon this???). Barring that, the Flyers should maybe hand a pick over to Lou for doing the pioneering. Really though...aside from that, isn't it just another poorly planned effort by the Flyers to go all in and fix everything at once w/ a bad contract?

Correction: He wants to leave Nashville before the new CBA kicks in and he can't make as much as he possibly can.

I don't think they can since everyone agreed to accept the results of binding arbitration.

I don't see how you can read that paragraph any other way. It's pretty black and white: term, salary, signing bonus, reporting bonus.

Here's a question - when does the next bonus kick in? I've been reading that Nashville would owe him $27 million during the next calendar year, so presumably if they match, his bonus would kick in at or before the time they could trade him. Would they really pay him after a year after paying him $27M? I don't see it.
