I guess it depends on what kind of poker player Homer is and whether or not he can call the Preds bluff. The Preds are saying we're going to match if you don't give us say Schenn for a couple of those 1st round picks. To me that links the two deals, which isn't allowed, but let's just say that somehow that passes the NHL's smell test. What's to keep Homer from saying screw you Poile, once time is up for the Preds to match the offer.

The two deals cannot be linked since Weber can no longer be traded by the Preds at this time.

They may have to take out a loan for the first year, if not longer, just to cover the bonus money in that contract.

I'd let him walk, take the picks, and blow it up and start over.
I agree with you and always thought the actual money being spent 1st year would be an issue. I also think that after they pay that crazy number they may have to trade him anyway. Seeing what Nash got, they may or may not do better.

Now they only have to deal with replacing Suter, which is going to be tough to do. There are some UFA's out there, but most are reclamation projects or just flat out old.

I think in some ways that this is a huge mistake. You watch, Weber likely will want out next summer when he can be traded.

They also need to go out and get a legitimate #1 Center, something they haven't been able to draft and develop on their own.

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

can they trade Weber now? i'd think PHI has enough young talent to make a deal.

NSH can't trade him for one year. but after that, they can. pretty sure the deal doesn't have an NTC.

If there isn't a no movement/trade you gotta' figure the Predators would explore their options in trading Weber. He might just be a Flyer yet, just not this coming season.

My understanding is that trade and movement clauses don't carry over in a situation like this. So they'll be free to trade him in a years time, though they probably will want to wait until the summer after that to get more bang for their buck (most of his salary is paid out July 1st every year).

Strong move by the Preds, even if Weber demands a trade I bet they'll be able to bring back a better return than four first round picks if they actually trade him.
