If they're in the late 1st round you can. They have to match or else that franchise is in big trouble. They can't have people thinking no one wants to go there or that they'll leave the 1st chance they get. The issue is whether or not the contract is front loaded. If it's $26 Million then they might not have a choice. In which case the 4 1st rounders would be a consolation prize.Quote:

From Philly's point of view, it's not a bad idea. they get the cap relief from Pronger's contract for the next 5 years, so it's not that big of an addition to their cap. they are giving up 4 picks that look to be in the back half of the draft. And god knows what the CBA will look like in 10 years. And even then, if they front load the contract they will be able to trade him to a team that wants a high cap hit but low salary.
It does make the LSchenn trade look more wtf. Pretty bad forward planning if the offer sheet was an option.
For Nash, they really are deciding whether they are rebuilding or contending. top 5 dmen make that money. and top dmen are what you need to win the Cup. Can they afford a contract with $50m over 4 years (26, 8, 8, 8)?
The CBA really does need to address these contracts. 7 year max. 10+ year contracts are just ridiculous.
Hypothetical question. Let's say you trade your 2013 and 2014 1st round picks back in 2011 to acquire a guy to make a run at the Cup, then you make an offer sheet like this and Nashville does not match. Does that mean you lose your 1st rounders in 2015, '16, '17, '18...so in essence you may not have a 1st round pick for 6 years?
Also, let's say the offer sheet is made, you lose your first round picks...then later this year you trade a player to a team and get a first rounder, does that pick automatically go to Nashville and then you would get back your pick in 2018, or do they only get the picks you already have on the books at the time the offer sheet is made? Say you have a first round pick at #28 but through a trade you get a first rounder that is #16, does Nashville get both, or can they pick and choose?
Four first rounders, all likely towards the very end of the first round, is a crappy return for a player of Weber's calibre. If the Preds can afford whatever bonus and salary contained within the first year of that contract, they should match it and look to trade him next summer instead (they can't trade him for a year if they choose to match). I'm sure they could get more proven assets and at least one real, impact NHL player for him. Four maybe's that could potentially become something five years down the road isn't very attractive for a franchise like Nashville who seem to have some real momentum with their fanbase right now. Or they could just keep him and that'd be that, which is probably the direction I'd lean if I were them.
That being said, if they can't afford that first year they don't have much choice.
Only the first rounders of the team that made the offer sheet can be used, so they can't acquire other teams first rounders and send them to the team that lost the player. In this example, if Nashville doesn't match then Philadelphia's next four first rounders will be the property of Nashville. Had Philly been in possession of more first round picks acquired from other teams it wouldn't have made a difference since those can't be used as compensation.Quote:
