Seriously though what the hell is the point of offering 4.75 million. That's a lowball number and everyone knows it. Basically at that point you're saying ok Mr Arb, we don't think there's any chance your coming within 50% of our number so go nuts.

Was there ever an arbiter that agreed though? I mean that would at least give the team some hope. Otherwise it's just embarassing. I mean professionally if the numbers are that far apart when I go into a negotiation (a serious one) I'm not getting the client, or if they lowball that hard, I don't want the job.
If you're a business (and both parties here are), each side wants the lowest/highest they can get. Weber knew he wasn't going to get 4.5 a year as much as he knew he wasn't getting 8.5 a year. It isn't good for either party though and it's why you don't often see it with big wigs. It's really why Parise got the deal he did. So both sides weren't bitter at the end.
Can we start the Jack Johnson for Shea Weber rumors now ?
As Smythe points out, it's all just part of the process. The Preds obviously didn't feel he was really worth $4.75M, as they were offering higher during contract negotiations. It is simply to set as low a bar as possible for the arbitrator to make a ruling on. I mean, if the Preds come over with a $6M asking, is it possible the arbitrator rules even higher, in the $7.75M-$8M range instead?
That said, the fact that the award ended up being $7.5M indicates that Poile probably didn't fight all that hard for the lower end of the range. It fits exactly into the range they were already planning to pay him.
Not when they trade Weber to Toronto for a A$$load of picks/players.
His point is, and I think it's a valid one, is that arbitration is supposed to be a decidedly fair amount for both parties involved. Yea Weber asking 8.5 was damn high...but holy **** asking 4.5 from the preds side. That's an EXTREME lowball. I mean yea 8.5 is high....but in the end they were only a mil off...and Nash management was...what....3 and a half off?
I think it may have set a poor tone to come in and say 4.5. I think if you come in and say 6..or 5.5. It at least looks like you give a ****..that 4.5 was probably the equivalent of a slap in the mouth to Weber and his agent.
