Colorado GM *raises hand*. I suppose Vokoun wanted to play for a contender. You have to admire him for that. Caps are the Eastern Conference favorites right now.

Still shaking my head over Colorado giving up a 1st and 2nd round pick for Varlamov. I'm not saying they could have signed Vokoun for the small amount that the Caps did, but Washington probably would have been happy with a 3rd for Varlamov.

Sure, if Backstrom stops being a slackass and Semin decides to actually make an effort in crunch time...and Carlson replaces Green who they trade for a bag of pucks (a nice bag of pucks, but a bag of pucks will be fine thankyouverymuch).

I'm just stunned at that trade...just absolutely stunned.

I just mentioned in the Heatley thread about how some of these teams are just clueless...Florida, SJ, Philly...I forgot to mention Colorado. What a difference there since the days of Lecroix (sp?) as GM.

The Caps deserved to be thrown in there too. I just hope that last year's right turn in philosophy carries over and that bringing in Ward and Hamrlik and bringing back Halpern keeps that going. They are all quality guys and they desperately need that in the lockerroom and on the ice. Backstrom, Semin, Green, and Ovechkin need some serious peer pressure to get their act together...or I want them ALL traded.

they are gonna be tough to beat, for DAMN sure... but i still have a linger issue with a couple of things.

    1. Bruce Boudreau

    2. they're still a little hollow in the middle.

They could use Arnott back for the 3rd line unless they move Laich there for good, but that would put Chimera at #3 LW or move Fehr or Ward to LW and neither of those options is so great.

If Backstrom can pull his head out...and lay off the cheeseburgers, they'll have a fine 1-2 with Johansson. But I'm not all that optimistic he'll pull his head out.

I'm also not optimistic that Semin (Ovechkin's runnin' buddy) and Green) take winning seriously enough. They've got a ton of talent but I think they follow Ovechkin's lead too much and don't want to play the system.

I do think it's funny that some folks put it on Boudreau to somehow get players like Ovechkin, Semin, Green, and now apparently Backstrom to change their personalities and work ethic...and if he doesn't it's his fault they don't win.

I know Lemaire is god's gift to Kovalchuk and all but there's only one Lemaire and while Boudreau isn't the second coming of Lemaire, those guys aren't going to win unless THEY change - and no coach is going to get them to do it until Leonsis is willing to give that coach the latitude Tortorella got with Lecavalier.

i just personally don't like the way Boudreau sees the game and coaches it... and all that is well before the fact that i think he's a foul mouthed whiny bitch.

now i'm not saying go off the deep end and Joe Sacco your players, but maybe a happy medium? what coaches CAN do is hold players accountable. i just don't think that Gabby is the right personality type for that set of players... Semin is on his own, he's going to do what he's going to do and they either have to accept that or let him go. he's NO different than guys like Frolov or, to a greater extent, Kovalev. i think there's probably a push/pull argument that we need to quit trying to turn these players into North Americans and let them play how their going to play... and either the team is strong enough to absorb their characteristics or they aren't.

and i fully agree about Leonsis having to be willing to give any coach that sort of Tortorella-esque latitude.

I don't understand why Florida decided to go with Theodore instead.
