I'm still surprised everyone thinks Calgary got away with robbery here. This is not larceny. Calgary gives up on a all star defenseman who is a threat in every zone and a prospect in Keith Aulie who will likely be an impressive shut down defenseman and can pair with Schenn or even Phaneuf. They get back Hagman, who has never been a factor on a good team, but has scored on bad ones. They also get White who will want a significant raise and, while having good stats has never been identified as a player with the pedigree of an all star. Stajan will likely be lost to UFA and who knows where he lines up on a good team. Don't even get me started on Mayers
I can't wait to hear what Tonga's brother has to say about this.
Currently though Phaneuf is a threat in his own zone to his own team...
Phaneuf is a great talent and the most talented guy in this deal but he play has fallen off dramatically the last two seasons and like you brought up before there are major issues with him in the locker room.
I agree though that the return is a bit light for Phaneuf but his recent play, contract, and attitude have devalued him some. That with a combination of Sutter under pressure to make some sort of move led to this deal it seems.
As far as Hagman and Stajan, Hagman shoots the puck, a lot. Seems like the Flames could use some more direct play. He has a nose for the net that doesn't really change if you are on a good team or a bad team. I think Stajan is a really nice player for them. The Leafs fans kill this guy cause he's not Doug Gilmour but he's a smart two way player with good passing skills. That two ability is means a lot for the Flames who play a disciplined system and he could see an increase in numbers if he plays with Iginla. I think it's a nice return for the Flames, it makes you wonder if Phaneuf's value has/had dropped off so much in the last two years in league's eyes or the Flames...
Hockey's original bad boy. The "Cowboy" Howie Young
Oh I'm with on Phaneuf having tremendous upside. As I said earlier in the thread, this potentially a big move for the Leafs and a worthy gamble considering they didn't really give up a ton, certainly no cornerstone players.
I mentioned that this is the sort of thing that could give Phaneuf a jolt. He has all the tools to be a franchise defenseman. I think the key is for the Leafs to surround him with some talent this off-season. I think Phaneuf on a bad team will only make his bad habits worse and it losing won't motivate him to get that much better. But a change of scenery plus a better environment around him could go a long way it getting him turned around.
One thing is for sure, I don't think Burke is done.
I think that the Flames will work hard to get him an extension before he goes UFA. Besides Olli the cupboard is pretty bare. Langkow is getting up there in age. Backlund isn't quite ready yet so bringing in Stajan and then extending him would seem to be in the plans. At least that is what I think the Flames will do.
Silver? Boston gets the gold.......
At first thought, I was thinking what the hell was Sutter smoking.
Looking at the contract numbers now, I'm now wondering what the hell Nonis was thinking (He did the Calgary deal).
Burke's now got $31,525,000 tied up in his top 6 defenseman and goaltender thru next season, and no draft picks.
Anaheim makes out as well here. They have disposed of Giguere's albatross of a contract after locking up Hiller, and they can walk away from Blake at season's end for the low cap hit of only $1.3M over the next 4 seasons.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.
