My, my, now this is an interesting morning.
My, my, now this is an interesting morning.
Relax people. Give it a while, and let things settle down, and we'll move it and tweak the title.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

I'm looking at it more from the Phaneuf part and his contract. He's flat out overrated. White isn't chopped liver either. He's solid and will likely be paired with JBo. Add in the other parts coming to Calgary that will be an immediate help from Day 1, this is a no brainer. Aulie may have a ton of POTENTIAL but the Flames just helped their team immensely for this season. Like all trades, it will take years to see who "won" but at face value, Calgary wins going away.
Lets be clear: Calgary definitely improves now at positions of need and replaces Phaneuf with a good defenseman in White. Hagman having another year on his deal certainly tips the deal (short term) to Calgary's advantage.
But for Toronto to acquire Phaneuf and Aulie is to bring a heck of a lot of upside to the Leafs.
perhaps the best part of the deal is that Phaneuf had reportedly become toxic in the dressing room. remember the reports of a locker room argument with Phaneuf and Sutter? Dion gets a fresh start and will perhaps mature. White is a good dman who will need a raise. Stajan helps this year and then is gone. Hagman stays for another year.
Good trade for both teams - Calgary might go on a good run now and Toronto gets a culture change and hope for the future.
