Default [Trade] Dave Steckel to Leafs for 2012 4th Round Pick

Maple Leafs acquire C Steckel from Devils for draft pick

Odd. Steckel just screamed New Jersey Devil to me, with his solid defensive game. Nails in the face-off circles as well. Curious why Lou would part with him so cheaply after just picking him up near the deadline. Cap space? They looking to make another move?

    Yeah, that was odd.

    Good move for Toronto, probably.

I haven't heard from Jens Karlsson in a while.

Sad that after working your entire life and sacrificing so much to get to the pinicle of your sport you'll only be known as "the guy that ended Crosby's career".

Dude wins 2/3rds of his faceoffs. If he can maintain that clip, or anything close, he's got an NHL career into his 40's.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

Only problem with Steckl is that he plays soft for a guy of his size. We have enough of that(Zubrus...pick up the white courtesy phone). Lou had to clear a spot for Stralman, who has done well under DeBoer. He was going to be 3rd or 4th line center anyway so we can afford to lose him. Don't think the Devils are done tweaking yet but the defense is lining up solidly depthwise. Not a big name D, but if they can get the job done...

Reading a lot on my Devils board and apparently Steckel looked really slow and soft in the preseason games, garnering a lot of worst player on the ice comments. Losing his cap hit while having a roster spot for a pretty good team depth wise ain't a bad thing either.

Should be a fan fave in Toronto...another big bodied player who plays like a petite marshmallow.

Thanks for the insight jd. I hope there's more to it than that though, I mean Mike Richards and Simon Gagne didn't look all that wonderful in the pre-season either. Hope one of the kids is ready to step up and anchor the bottom 6.

Does Burke just not like acquiring skilled players?
