this center prospect they just drafted with that pick - Zack Phillips also seems a bit interesting,

Isn't this the same Burns that Minnesota was using at forward a few years ago and nobody was sure if he would pan out?
The Original Pancake Hater
What is the logic behind you guys believing Minny won this trade?
don't take that as assholish, I am generally wondering what is your takes.
I feel like Setoguchi is NOT that good of a player. Yea he is good for 20, but probably not even 20-20. maybe a guaranteed 20-15. Like I said before, he will flounder hardcore without Thornton or Pavelski...hell he floundered WITH those guys.
Burns is concussion prone too isn't he? I know that Lou was kicking the tires on Burns because he is that coveted 'puck-moving' defenseman but I'm glad that didn't work out. It's a weird move to sign a guy and then trade him, smacks of desperation. Unlike you guys I think Gooch might actually thrive in a new environment. Also, with the cap being raised...the floor has also been raised. Don't know where Minny stands but they may have needed to take on some salary.
Hopefully this means that Bagnall will get his shot at the big club.
Burns was leaving as a free agent, or would command a ridiculous salary to stay next summer. Considering that Minnesota also has Koivu's raise on their cap, they are spending a lot of money on keeping players that while very good, aren't getting them to where they needed to be.
Granlund is coming in, but look at their wings - Brunette, Kobasew, Miettinen are all old and/or unrestricted, and they just don't provide much offense.
They badly needed offensive minded wingers, and while both Setoguchi and Coyle won't likely make all-star teams, they are both a huge improvement over what they had available immediately and in the future. Also keep in mind that Minnesota isn't a sought after UFA location.
The Phillips pick was a good one as well. It doesn't matter if they "win" the trade with San Jose in this deal - Burns is clearly the best player involved - what matters is that they made a big improvement to their overall depth in an area of severe weakness.
And now San Jose has another expensive player on their hands, one who will need to be retained next summer. They also weakened their wings and didn't really add anything that was preventing them from getting further in the playoffs anyway. Burns will notch a ton of points with that team, but since when was that their problem?
as fantastic as Burns is, he's not only a big injury risk, he's unrestricted after next season. the latter issue is pretty significant when you consider that San Jose already has a number of $6+ million players. Burns gives the Sharks what they need on paper... i just don't think he'll give them what they need in reality. frankly, i don't think there's a player in the league that can.
Setoguchi is very streaky, sure, but he never stops busting his ass during his cold streaks... i also thought he was one of their best overall players throughout the playoffs.
Coyle is a very good prospect that will likely make it into the league and has the potential of becoming a very good player.
and they got a first round pick in this draft - Zack Phillips. he played alongside Jonathan Huberdeau, and even Huberdeau had great things to say about him.
Living in the bay area I see the sharks more than most and even several days after this trade I don't see the logic. Burns is essentially a full season rental (or they plan on letting pavelski go to resign couture) for which you've given up one of the only reasonable scoring winger contracts you had and a good prospect who actually had a shot at giving you ELC relief. I know the knock on SJ was they were thin on D but between Burns and Boyle they'll find both of them wanting 24-25 minutes a night which could be interesting since they won't play together even on the PP.
*edit Just realized Burns is up after this season not next

This is just a thought, but I see it as a panic move. The Kings (without Kopitar) gave San Jose a really rough time in the playoffs. In fact, two of the games San Jose won in OT. Now, with Kopi healthy, and the News of Richards coming here, I think San Jose kinda panicked and wanted to bolster their blueline. With Kopi healthy (hell, and especially with Williams at 100%), I think the Kings take that series. You add Richards to that mix...San Jose KNOWS they are in trouble.
I'm not saying it was the smart thing to do, but I truly think it's part of the reason. The San Jose trade went down pretty soon after the Richards trade did, so take that into consideration.
