Nashville has this QO problem, and resigning of Weber. I think they pretty much realized they are going to have to send some of these guys to FA based on the QO problem, meaning they will have to overpay for what was seemingly going to be cheap RFA contracts. So couple that with Weber in arbitration..they may end up in a worst case scenario of having to pay too much money to too money players and losing them for no return. With that in mind, I think their GM is making the best out of a bad situation and shipping them now for a return before he loses some for nothing to free agency.

I expect Nashville to deal at least 1 more of those RFA/QO guys before all is said and done.

I think you summed it up pretty well.

But I still think based on how well some of those guys played in the playoffs, and how needy teams are right now to fill cap space..some of the contract offers they get will PERHAPS handcuff Nashville if they want to land them and keep Weber and Rinne along with others via free agency.
Perhaps. It just depends on how the RFA case shakes out. By my understanding, the Preds followed protocol on the filing of qualifying offers with the courier service by the proper time. There's some question as to the notification of agents, but from what I have heard, they have a better case than Chicago did. That's last I heard, at least.

There are only 4 players in question, and arguably only Kostitsyn would be due for any seriously major increase in his salary, if it goes to that scenario. In the event a team wanted to get into a bidding war, Nashville has the depth to weather the loss of any, or even all 4 of the players in question (not that it still wouldn't hurt). I just don't think it's that big a factor.

Franson was likely on his way out after this season anyway. They were going to need to lose one of Klein/Blum/Franson, and the former 2 had already displaced Franson on the depth chart. There is actually little surprise that Franson was dealt, at this point, it's more that there was a thought he'd go in a package for a forward, rather than as incentive for a salary dump. Either way, I'm cool with it as a Preds fan, between Sullivan, Dumont and now Lombardi, that's around $10M cleared going forward.

Yea and Blum and Klein have really come into their own in their respective roles on the Preds back line. Klein impressed the **** out of me last season. Fransson seemed to flounder a bit.

Ryan Ellis is ready for a look as well.

On a side note, Franson has one wide-ass turning radius. He was getting beat left and right by speedy Anahiem forwards. Toronto now has a huge defense, but not a lot of pure muscle in that group.

It had to be tough for a team with a low internal budget to plan with Lombardi's contract status.
