The only thing that surprised me about the Salvador C is that he's 36 years old. Being on a 35+ contract and all it's just surprising. I'm sure they know their locker room better than we do though.

It's not a personal attack that I think he's over paid. I know why they over paid and I might even have over paid were I in their shoes...
but the fact remains that NHL players get over paid based on an equation factoring in UFA/RFA status, timing, other players departing etc etc etc
Yeah, I have to agree with the Doc. He's a good player, but not $6MM good. After losing Parise, they had to lock him up, and apparently his agent knew it.
Do you really think it was THAT egregious of an overpayment? On the average I think the number is 5.6 mil per year. A slight overpayment, perhaps. But to suggest that he would have got less in free agency is ridiculous. In fact, I think he took a hometown discount. For every ridiculous exaggerated 'overpayment' tweet I could find an article saying that this is a textbook contract under the new cba. I get it, it's fun and clever to not actually let facts get in the way...but if you think that this is going to be the straw that breaks the camels back you have already forgotten what the usual assortment of overpayers do in free agency every year.
note to self...why even argue?
Of course it's not the straw that breaks the camels back.... there's at least 8 more years for this CBA to get out of control.
That's why I said the FIRST reason. This is evidence in my mind that the CBA hasn't actually addressed the core problem facing the NHL which is salary inflation. The fact that the VERY FIRST CONTRACT OF ANY SIGNIFICANCE handed out immediately following a lockout and a new CBA can be questioned as being an overpayment is funny to me.
Sorry it happens to be a guy on your favorite team... but if they had given any other 27 year old guy who never scored more than 60 some points in a season an 8 year 5.xx Million contract I'd have laughed at that to!
You haven't answered the question...is it really that egregious of an overpayment? If he continues to produce as he has and possibly play the best hockey of his career(which I think is VERY possible) during the course of the deal I can make an argument that he might be underpaid. If you hold this up as the firing shot in the 'oh noes, here we go again' downward spiral you are really not going to like what comes in the offseason. Do you think salaries would miraculously trend down? I'm just not sure I get your complaint. Did you think players would start asking for less. That general managers would know they could lowball to keep salary inflation down? I'm not sure what you are looking for? Pretty sure this deal is less than he would have been offered under the previous cba.
Jesus how do you become SO HUMORLESS when it comes to the Devils???
NO it's not THAT egregious an overpayment... but there are 8 years of CBA for this pebble to turn into an avalanche.
Was it that egregious an overpayment when Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux were making $6 Million a year? No... but look where it got us.
I made a joke about the entirety of the NHL and your boy happens to be the guy who was first through the door this time.... yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh.
Annnnnnnnnnnnnd I ask again, did you expect salaries to go down, really. Yes, salaries will inflate. Hopefully revenues will match. Yeah, I am humorless about this. I take offense that you are blaming a relatively low key signing as the typhoid mary of the new cba.
When did 8 years and $45MM become "low key"? I don't think it was that excessive, but for a long term contract the Devils should have gotten a discount. Based on his numbers he's a $5.75MM player in a 1-2 year UFA situation. I would be upset if my team signed him for more than $4.5MM annually at 8 years. Just my $.02.
