at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.
Too bad Mad Mike isn't GM anymore. Imagine what he would've given up to acquire him. :P
Report: Oilers, Sabres working on major trade | ProHockeyTalk
And just so you know, there was talk Wednesday afternoon that the Sabres were working on a deal with Edmonton that would send Ryan Miller or Thomas Vanek and possibly both to the Oilers in a package that would bring Nail Yakupov and more to Buffalo. Whether it actually happens is another story. But as it stood Wednesday, the two sides had considered, or were considering, a major swap.
Also, see what Igor Kravchuk has to say about Nail.
Russian scout Igor Kravchuk unimpressed by Oilers forward Nail Yakupov | Oilers | Sports | Edmonton Sun
“He has to make up his mind, if he’s not going to change his game, then he has no future (in the NHL),” said Kravchuk. “From what I see, his team game is really, really poor. He tries to do a lot of things by himself, he has absolutely no defence. That’s what really concerns us as (Russian Olympic) scouts.
“If he’s going to listen to what the coach says and he tries to change his game, he has a future.”
So they might be trading Yak+ for 2 soon to be UFA's. Sounds like a good plan. What a waste of a pick
Maniacal Laugh, Maniacal Laugh, Maniacal Laugh
Agree they should've traded the pick or taken Murray. I watched Murray for four years at Everett and you can't teach the way he skates. He is exactly what EDM needs but Lowe was enamored with the idea that he could get the late '70's/early '80's Oiler "band" back together with Nail leading the way ...
Razor decided to step in on this one in his own way:
Dallas Stars | Razor With an Edge: Razor Wrote His Thoughts Down - Dallas Stars - Razor With An EdgeArtists vs Systems
Nice timing with Nail Yakupov being scratched by his coach and flogged by some media for comments about not finding play without the puck (ie ‘systems’) all that palatable to have legendary defenseman Bobby Orr, on the stump for his new book, Orr: My Story quoted during his interview on CBC stating, “I never heard of a system growing up. Imagine me playing in a system.” Ya, imagine the loss. I honestly feel for some of these young Russian forwards who just want to create and awe. I believe if hockey could abolish tracking and some d-zone coverage/shot blocking the results would be balletic and epic.
