Why do I keep thinking that Terry Murray would be the right hire there?
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

    @DarrenDreger4m
Oilers offered three 2nd round picks for Braydon Coburn at the Draft and couldn't close the deal. Trades in season are much harder to make.

Dreger just posted that they tried to pry Coburn out of Philly for 3 - 2nd Round Picks. My first thought is "They should have offered more".

They need to Overpay somebody for what they need. They should offer up the farm to Carolina for Tim Gleason because he is what they need.

There has to be a lot more out there about the Oilers organization that we don't even hear about. Its Edmonton and Canada and yet there are only 3 players that wanted to go and play there (Smyth/Ference/Schultz) and in the case of the latter, its because he wanted to play in the NHL right away. So what else is going on up there that we don't know about.

This, right here. If they really wanted Coburn they wouldn't have made a NHL '14 offer. If they want to acquire the players they need it's going to hurt, period.

Look what Lombardi had to give up for Richards, Carter and Penner (2 1st Round Picks, 1 2nd Round Pick, 2 former 1st round picks in Schenn and Teubert, a young power forward in Simmonds and a skilled defensemen entering his prime in Jack Johnson). Let's not forget, the players Lombardi acquired were players the previous teams were eager to get rid of and it still cost an arm and a leg to get them.

Until MacTavish has the balls to make trades like those, the Oilers aren't going anywhere. I take that back, until MacTavish has the assets AND the balls to make those kinds of trades, the Oilers will continue to tread water.

Speaking of assets, how the Oilers scouting staff keep their jobs, I'll never know. That crew has produced next to no NHL players outside of their 1st round picks. The cupboards are nearly bare in Edmonton, despite the high drafts picks in each round for several seasons in a row.

Since 2007, of all players selected outside of the 1st round, the players with the most NHL games played are:
    2nd Rd 2009 Anton Lander - 68 games
    4th Rd 2007 Linus Omark - 66 games
    6th Rd 2008 Teemu Hartikainen - 52 games
    2nd Rd 2010 Tyler Pitlick - 3 games
    5th Rd 2008 Philippe Cornet - 2 games

    Embarrassing.

You summed it up perfectly in one word, Crew. Its the good ole boys network there. Sather handed the reigns to Lowe, who is clueless on how to run an organziation and is doing it just the way he learned how. They have recycled a former player then coach to be GM, brought back their former Assistant GM who got fired from totally ****ing up Columbus (I think it was worse off after they canend him than it was before he took over, and it was horrific before he started). Their scouting staff has done the same **** year in and year out.

The more I see how other teams that are successful operate (Boston/Penguins/Red Wings) with multiple voices being heard before they make decisions, the more I'm glad Lombardi has set his organization up in a similar fashion.

Scouting staff, shmouting staff... What real need is there if you're picking in the top 3 every year?

CSS does all their scouting for them
