A lot of Vancouver fans have become Kings fans.

It's the reason Kings fans are becoming more and more hated.

The only realistic option to win a Cup in Vancouver is to blow it up and start over again. If that's what they plan on doing, then good for them.

If they plan on "competing" they should have just kept Gillis and allow him to ditch Tortorella and go back to what got them to game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, which is what he said he would do just days prior to being fired. It likely wouldn't result in a Cup win but the results would be better than trying to get that roster to play a heavy game, which is what I suspect they'll end up doing with the new GM until reality slaps them into the face.

To do exactly that, they would need to suck for another year or three, and when I mean suck, I mean finish dead last and win the McDavid sweepstakes. If they leave Torts where he is next year with the exact same style. That loses enough games by Xmas to sell the "Rebuild" to the fan base, pisses off enough of the players with NTC's that would then approach management about doing just that, and then replace them with journeymen and crap players to lose even more than they had before.

Keeping Gillis would have just continued to prolong their presence in the "Black Hole". Name one team that existed there for a long period that was able to make a serious playoff run in the last 20 years. You likely won't find one.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

Having the top pick in the draft doesn't guarantee anything either, as the Edmonton Oilers have thoroughly proven (as everyone is aware):

    Top Edmonton draft pick:
    2007 - 06
    2008 - 22
    2009 - 10
    2010 - 01
    2011 - 01
    2012 - 01
    2013 - 07

Didn't Calgary make a bunch of first round exits? I know what keeping Gillis would mean, I'm saying if they're going to end up going the last push route which is not going to result in anything as it is, they should have at least kept Gillis to maximize their results whatever they may end up being. I'm just being realistic about what I think is going to happen, they're probably get a new guy and end up doing the same thing after this PR move anyways. In the end all roads lead to a black-hole for them, if they're so hell-bent on going that way keeping Gillis might at least result in one or two last decent playoff runs instead of putting a new guy in with his own ideals and the time it's going to get to acclimate himself JUST to try the same thing.

That's why I think firing Gillis only makes sense if they plan to blow the whole thing up. Which they likely don't, it's a PR move that's going to waste everyone's time and appease the fanbase for a bit. There isn't a GM in the league who can turn that roster into a Stanley Cup Winner without blowing it up, so getting rid of Gillis is completely inconsequential if they don't plan on doing it. I mean OF COURSE doing a full blown rebuild is the right thing to do, they'll be forced into it eventually, I just think Aquilinis have zero interest in going that route right now.

If they do plan on nuking the whole thing this would be a good time to do it as it gives Linden time to put his cabinet together and perhaps most importantly get some solid scouts in time for the draft. Of course, I don't think they actually will nuke it, but I'm sure we're all in agreement that they should.

The way he talked at his presser, the scouting thing is going to fall to Stan Smyl, who Linden glowed about. He's going to build a big team in the Detroit mold (Just like the Kings). He likely won't make too many changes there until after the draft (When most scouting departments do so anyway). From the sound of it, he already has an idea on who he wants and talked about needing permission from teams to talk to folks.

The other feeling I get from this is that this isn't as much a PR move as everyone makes it, and it may have been in the works for quite some time, and this was just the time to do it.

I could be turned back to liking the Canucks more. Their owners are total D-Bags, but there's always been a place in my heart for players like Linden and Nieuwy. He said it perfectly in the PC, playing the game the right way.
