The Canucks, thanks to Mike Gillis, are declining.
It's not just this year. It's been a process since he took over as GM.
Luongo's contract
Naming Luongo captain
Announcing to the world he wants to trade Luongo
Ballard trade
Marco Sturm
Acquiring overrated and overpaid Booth
Being mostly status quo when his team isn't getting any younger. In fact this team is almost all Burke/Nonis...STILL
Adding no character or leadership to his team while continuing to allow the players to play like cowards
Claiming that offense wins
Not firing Vigneault
Hodgson trade along with it's awful timing (YIKES!)
The Sundin signing
Letting Mitchell walk because they were stuck with Ballard
Not much to brag about on the drafting front
I think Gillis was the luckiest man in the world to inherit the Sedins, Kesler, Edler, the goalies, etc. The team reminds me of the Sharks in that they have repeatedly failed and yet the players and coach keep getting another chance. All the while they've become one of the oldest teams in the NHL.
Yeah, but those things that Nonis did brought them 2 President's trophies and within 1 game of winning a Stanley Cup.
I've been reading Behind the Moves about the history of GM's, and its really apparent that some GM's are builders and some are closers. Nonis built them up into what they are, and all Gillis is trying to do is close it out.
I will say that I bet Gillis would love getting Hodgson back right about now.
Looks like Gillis has something in principal (Stolen from HFBOARDS):
Canucks GM Mike Gillis won
“But you have to avoid injuries, and you have to have great goaltending. That’s what L.A. got last year. They wouldn’t have even been close to being in the playoffs if Jonathan Quick was not the best player in the National Hockey League last year. And they get in the playoffs, avoid injuries, play the same six defenceman all the way through, some guys rise to the occasion, they get good matchups and great goaltending ...”
Makes it sound like we completely lucked our way to the Cup. **** that franchise.
