NYI did this early enough to see if Vanek will help the team, if he doesnt they can still trade him at the deadline and get assets back

Vanek’s agent says no extension with Isles just yet | ProHockeyTalk

Apparently that deal didn’t come with an already-agreed-upon contract extension, either. That’s the word from Vanek’s agent Stephen Bartlett, who intimated to TSN’s Bob McKenzie that the 29-year-old might wait until the summer for a new deal (despite dropping an “excited to be an Islander” line).
“We’ll take it day by day and focus on the short term for now and see where we are at season’s end,” Bartlett said.
Translation: “We’re going to see if Vanek can score 50 or 60 goals skating with John Tavares, thus opening the door for an enormous auction.” Or, that’s at least how some might read it.

I actually hope he burns them and runs, I'm almost 99% sure Vanek will not be worth his next contract. Particularly since he was barely worth this one.

You guys don't grasp that Moulson generated those numbers WITH Tavares and Vanek produced his number without ANYBODY.

at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.

I don't think Moulson is a Cheechoo situation. 3 30 goal seasons in a row, a truncated season where he was pretty close to on pace and 6 goals in 11 games? There's too much consistency there. I'm not saying he's as good as Vanek but really this seems like drastic overpayment for last season rentals compared to the Kovalchuck, Hossa and Iginla deals

Vanek is the second leading scorer in his draft class behind Staal. He's scored more goals than Carter and Perry.

Vanek was heralded as one of the great young snipers from that incredible '03 draft until he signed that offer sheet that Edmonton presented him. Since he got his gigantic pay day he's been labeled overpaid and one-dimensional which is absurd. He's a fantastically productive winger with size. Every team in the league would kill to have him.

Best set of hands in that class.

So which of the comparable deals that moved Iginla, Kovalchuk or Hossa doesn't apply to Vanek? Isn't the going rate 1st round picks and prospects? I don't see active roster players going back in those deals unless you consider Moulson to be a straight salary dump by NYI to help offset the Vanek contract.

He seems like a perfect fit for Darryl Sutter's system but he's going to command more money than Parise, so I doubt Lombardi can coax him over to the west coast, but just the thought of Vanek and Kopitar makes me giddy.
