That literally anything can be offensive to someone. So who is to decide what is and isn't in professional sports where the heat of battle gets some really filthy stuff thrown around. I can guarentee that Avery has said far worse on the ice than what was said to him. Calling another player who isn't gay a f** isn't as personal an attack as telling them thier sister susie sucks a mean c**k IMO.

I do have to go back to that South Park episode as I think the meaning of the word f** has once again changed as most uses are not directed at gay people and not to suggest that the person they are insulting is actually gay, but rather a annoying a-hole at the time.

Maybe Simmer was using the original definition and feels that Avery is a person that picks up small sticks and twigs?

It's not like it's some secret that calling a gay man a *** is a "bad" thing.

Going to extreme examples doesn't further any point you're trying to make. You either think Simmonds using the term is wrong, or you don't. If you don't, it's because you don't see the harm in calling someone a ***. If that's your opinion, fine. Don't run from it. Just come out and say that you think that. I'm sure you don't feel it would be ok for someone to call Simmonds a n*****, but that just means you have different levels of discrimination. I'm sure that in the 30's, they felt the same way about black guys. Sometimes you're just on the wrong side of history. It doesn't make you a bad person.
Look how cute you are when you get flustered. Please don't hang labels on me; that just makes you guilty of the same offenses committed by those you're indirectly admonishing in this thread.

Sadly, in the real world things aren't as simple as you describe above. Calling people names is wrong. Regardless of whether it's based on race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic standing, intelligence, smell, appearance, etc. I'm sure you agree that there are different degrees of wrongness and that this is less of an offense than if Simmonds would have taken out a hatchet and split Avery's head open. The oversensitivity of society as a whole is my problem, not gays, African Americans, women or Methodists. When did we become such pussies? (sorry ladies)

I say we stop this now. Gay people (regardless of what you may think) have just as much intestinal fortitude as you do. They're big kids that can take care of themselves without straight-crusaders coming to save the day. Don't let straight-guilt lead you to believe they're weaker and more vulnerable than anybody else. Jeez, have some respect, will ya?

I'm not hanging labels. I said you'll be on the wrong side of history on this one. You probably don't like it, but you will. One day people will look back at those who had your opinions about gay marriage and the use of the word *** and wonder why you felt that way when it's really no big deal. Like I said, embrace it. I won't think any less of a person for feeling that way. I just find it odd that it's such an issue for people. It also seems weird that people feel a need to jump to the defense of someone for calling someone a ***. I mean, I'm sure Wayne Simmonds has "just as much intestinal fortitude as you do" and can defend himself as well. Just seems curious how you guys keep changing course on why it's ok that he said it. "Avery is just trying to draw attention to himself because he won't face him on the ice" became "Eh, Avery has said worse things to people" became "He's not gay so it doesn't matter" became "People say stuff on the ice all the time" became "It's not as bad as calling someone a n*****" became "They can defend themselves". As if we're fighting for some cause or something. . .it's really just called not being a douchebag. If you feel that's too sensitive (and society is as well), I encourage you to start referring to people by racial slurs and explain that you're just trying to show them how to be tougher.

Also, as far as "straight-guilt"? WTF does that even mean? If you think that I harbor some sort of resentment towards myself because I'm straight, that's just silly. I just think people who have issues with a gay person because they're gay are kinda dumb. There's no self-loathing going on.

But, I'm done. You guys have your opinions. Keep 'em. I really don't care. It gets boring and tiresome listening to the same ol same ol.

Well if that's the case we should all just call each other racial slurs. We're all adults.

The point is just because same ahole calls us a name, most people dont put their thumbs in their mouths and go into the fetal position. Once again the fool that uses the racial slur is the one who ends up looking like a putz. Once again- if some dip **** ahole wants to use a slur against-why would I get offended when the source is a dip**** ahole?

In a utopia, sure, these words would have no power and those that use those words would be looked at as fools and out casted. Can we agree that we don't live in a utopia?

I mean, to make an extreme example, a righteous man has no use for a gun when he has intellect and morals. Now how does that apply to reality?

So expecting people to show some small amount of common sense and and even the slightest modicum of strength when faced with gibberish from fools is an idea that you consider outlandish? Seems to me a better definition of Utopia would be one in which people think they will somehow go through life without ever hearing words that might offend them.

Outlandish, no. Unlikely in reality, yes. This nation is heading to Idiocracy and you expect the general public to take moral high ground when provoked by hate speech?

As an aside, I think the Simmonds/anti-gay slur thing is overblown, however wrong it was for Simmonds to say it.

And, BTW, I totally agree with your last sentence. I do in fact have very strong anti-censorship views.

So turning the other cheek and not giving two farts what some idiot says is unrealistic? Agreed with the Idiocracy point but to me the knee kerk offense if part of that. Its like the scene from Life of Brian where the old man gets stoned for saying Jehova.

Fair enough. Nice debating with you as well. We worked in Idiocracy and Monty Python which always scores points with the folks at home.
