He just strikes me as a libertine kind of guy.

Even though I'm not anti-gay it would be hypocritical of me to say I've never used a gay slur. I work in a kitchen & the language can get pretty vulgar. All of us have called each other f*gs both in anger and as a joke. But it's wrong & I know it.

I don't know if Simmonds said what's alleged. I can't tell from watching & only those who were there know the truth. If he did, it was wrong. Even if it was in the heat of battle. We all need to change our thinking on this. It should be just as bad calling someone a f*g as it is calling them a n***er. Even if you think homosexuality is a sin and disgusting, it 's still not right using that word. And even though the league didn't discipline Simmonds, I hope they had a long talk with him about this issue. Especially with what just happened to him with the banana incident.

And yes I know most people like Simmonds & hate Avery. It doesn't make it OK, if he did say it. However, didn't Georges Laraque say that Avery called him a monkey a few years back? But just like now, there was no audio so nothing could be proven. Hey, maybe if Avery admits to calling Laraque a monkey then Simmonds can admit to calling Avery a f***ot.

Default Its not about the players - its about the youth -

    Everyone,

Please allow a frame of reference from an avid sports fan who happens to be gay. (Yes, ask my partner, I am a sports fan first, in fact, while I write this I have one tv on one NFL game, another on another, and a third on the Red Zone channel.)

Its not just about Sean Avery, its about young people who hear these comments from people they look up to. The argument on whether athletes should be role players or not withstanding, the fact is, kids do look up to them. With Wayne being one of the few black players in the league, I would argue many young African-Americans who love the sport look up to him.

When I was young, I heard the F-G, g-y, and other similar slurs continuously at sporting events. It really made me question myself. Obviously, gays were not supposed to like sports, based on everything I heard. I questioned if I was really gay, because, even according to gay media, I was supposed to like pop music, dancing, and clothing with glitter. I listened to punk rock, wore clothing with patches, and would rather spend my time at a Clippers, Dodgers, or Kings game. I also questioned my allegiances to sport, if every time I went to a game I was made to feel like I was less than the people there.

At 34, I could care less if someone calls me a f-g. I have a great life, a great job, a great partner, a family that could care less about my sexuality. However, its not about me. A g-y youth is 3 times more likely to commit suicide than a straight kid. This isn't because being g-y inherently means you will be depressed. Its because they feel the effects of society.

This is what it is really about.

Thank you for what could possibly be the most coherent, relevant, thought provoking FIRST post that anyone has ever given. I only have one qualm with it.. what's with the spaces when you type out gay? If youre gay, you're gay. Im straight. Not s-----t. Spell it out, family. It'll be OK.

I just hope you aren't a Cowboys fan.
