Winnepeg is the ****hole of Canada. Is that true? From what I've heard, it's between Winnepeg and Regina (I always pronounced it Re-gee-na until I was corrected...it sound like vagina!).

Of course Atlanta doesn't care as much as Winnipeg, hockey has been in the culture of the latter for over a hundred years, the former, maybe 20...maybe. What I take exception with is the belief that hockey will NEVER work in some markets, while being unwilling to give those markets a sufficiently long time-frame for hockey to permeate their culture. Surely Winnipeg was not the hockey hotbed even 75 years ago that it is today?
I'm not of the opinion that hockey is over-inflated at all, it is a very natural result of the expansion of general hockey interest amongst the population of North America. Honestly, I have NO issue with Winnipeg having a team, nor Quebec, I rather wish that they had expanded to a final 32 teams (even 16 in both conferences, an even half of each conference making the playoffs) to include both while retaining all the American teams. Yeah, I know, queue the 'hockey is diluted' and 'we need to contract to 20 teams' crowd.
Apparently the Top 3 are Saskatoon, Calgary and Edmonton.
Edmonton One of Canada
I think it was either Mark Chipman or David Thomson who referred to Winnipeg as the 3rd fastest growing economy yesterday during their press conference and that claim is supported by the Conference Board of Canada.
Winnipeg
(Can't do any more digging into this though as apparently my Boss is expecting me to actually work today.... what a basturd)![]()
From what i've heard True North has invested a lot of money in marketing for the Manitoba Moose, so for them they would to use the name, logos and jerseys, which makes sense.
The Jets franchise is in Phoenix, you can't just change the franchise cause the city is getting a team back. If it was the Coyotes i'd agree 100% but it's not.
They're still deciding. The NHL has already said they could use the Jets if they want to. My guess is that they won't and it's for one reason. They won't be able to sell as many new jerseys. Sad, but bet that plays a BIG part. Just you watch though, 3rd jersey will be the old Jets one.
The history and archives didn't move to Baltimore though, their owner basically just left town and started a new team. When the Jets became the Coyotes all the team history went with 'em, they have retired #'s for christ sake hanging of former Jets in Phoenix. For that reason they shouldn't be the Jets.
Just got an Espn text alert that Gary Bettman expects the rest of the league to play a more 'balanced' shedule this season to accomodate the Winnipeg Whatevers. I don't have a link, sorry.
So,the NHL drops the ball and expects all the teams to just cover for them. That's just swell. This has been handled in typical 'we'll fix it afters' fashion. No move should have been considered until realignment was also sorted out. PERIOD. Winnipeg should have to play a lameduck season in Atlanta or be prepared to adjust their travel plans. No team in the league should sign off on this. Are the Winnipeg fans being asked to commit to their season seats during a work stoppage that will occur one season after they get hockey back. Theres thein the room.
