I think it would be a struggle, at times, but I'm fairly certain the franchise was sustainable. The product on the ice has pretty much been a joke, and the owners indifferent toward supporting it, outside of the one season they mandated the team make the playoffs (and to do so, Waddell shipped out picks and prospects for aging veterans, setting the team back further).
That said, Atlanta NOT being a great 'sports city' and the economy taking a dump haven't helped matters either.

One thing that I haven't seen brought up is. . .how does this affect Phoenix. We ALL know they're going to be moving at some point, but to where now? Do they beg the guy from RIM to come back? Doubtful. Do they talk to AEG about KC? Maybe but is that a risk they want to take? Vegas? Hamilton? They've already made their issues clear about both of those cities. I'm thinking this might be one of the reasons the deal hasn't been agreed to yet?
Glendale will continue to look for a new buyer for the Coyotes throughout the year, if someone steps up, then they'll likely be in Phoenix for the next 40 years minimum (as was agreed to with Hulsizer before Goldwater stepped in with its lawsuit threats). If no one bites on a deal with Glendale, I think KC will be the next in line to pursue a team.
The least likely would probably be Hamilton. They tried before, and the NHL/Maple Leafs were not having it. Too close to Toronto, and the Leafs were throwing a fit about it.
If the Yotes cant be in Phoenix, I hope they go to Vegas. At least they'd still be within driving distance for me.
