Thread: Winnipeg in talks to acquire Thrashers

I'd like to go on record by saying that they should under no circumstances be named the Jets. And it looks like they won't be. The Jets play in Glendale now.

I've heard rumors of Manitoba Falcons. Winnipeg has a history with the name Falcons plus it's a bird, like a thrasher is. Plus there's the whole Atlanta Falcons thing.

I agree. The Jets are technically in Phoenix so calling it that would be pretty lame.

Any chance they're just going to stick with Winnipeg Thrashers? Or are they dead set on changing the Thrashers part?

The Coyotes play in Phoenix. Calling them the Jets is like calling the Avs the Nordiques.

The bankruptcy proceeding wrote off all of the debt, which is what bankruptcy does. Unless- they have accrued more debt in the last 2 seasons?

I don't think all debt is eliminated. In a chapter 11, payment to debtors is delayed and/or reduced depending on the plan and assets of the company. but it all isn't gone.

Sounds like Pegger's wants them called Jets, but the ownership might want a fresh start.

That's right, but I think they went fully 100% bankrupt though. The sale price, the price the NHL paid for the team, all went to the creditors- one of them being Gretzky. It's all moot at this point anyway, it was 2 seasons ago. I'm sure they've racked up more debt since.

I'm pretty sure they'll change it. The thrasher is the state bird of Georgia so it wouldn't make much sense anymore. There apparently is a problem with merchandising because of how late this is all happening before next season starts. I've read other rumors about how they may stick with the current colors (maybe even name) for one year before everything changes. Kind of like how the team will play in the southeast for year 1 and then move to the northwest after that.
