    Default Greetings from Beijing....

I'm an LA native...well... started watching the Kings a little before Gretz came - I had a friend (who I had a crush on) who was a big hockey fan because her dad was hardcore into the Kings. Favorite player during that era was Dave Taylor. As a kid I didn't know much about the game other than the fact that Taylor hit people hard... and that was fun to watch.

Anyway, now with kids of my own it was important to keep the loyalty alive (as with the Lakers and Dodgers). We bought them their Kings shirts and all. Then a couple of years ago, we went around looking for newspapers to cut out Kings articles and decorated our family room during their run to the Cup. I think that process (and winning the cup) had our two older kids (4 and 6 at the time) hooked for life. (The little one was too little to care... and still is).

Now, we are in Beijing because of work. They show some of the NHL games, but very few are live broadcasts, and never a Kings game. So, I paid for Gamecenter to watch games... Behind the Great Firewall... sometimes the connection is bad, so I've had to subscribe to a VPN... which even still gets throttled (especially recently around the anniversary of an event that happened here 25 years ago that no one talks about).

Anyway, so for the most part, I can watch online and sometimes the kids crowd around me with my laptop, or jump on me to see the screen when I yell to see what I'm yelling about.

Anyway, that's about me. Been reading LGK for quite a few years now... but only now felt like I "needed" to start posting. Thanks for being a great place for news, talk, and everything else.

Cheers from across the big pond.

(I should add... right now CCTV5+ is broadcasting the game.... but it is on a 5 minute delay... which is means my computer shows it faster. :p )

Today, I actually had both the CCTV5+ (Chinese Central Television, channel 5 plus) broadcast and the feed via nhl.com. Ever so often I turned the sound on on the Chinese broadcast to hear what they were saying about the plays. For those who don't know, for a lot of international sporting events, they will be broadcast here which is essentially the same video feed as the major US or UK feed (or Spanish in the case of La Liga games), but the commentary is done by two or three guys watching the game on a monitor - seeing exactly what we see. Today, it was identical to the NBC feed, without the NBC commentary, reporters, commercials, etc. So when you guys see tv timeouts, or rink-side interviews, we don't see them. Instead, we get further replays of things or just watch rink with guys skating around waiting for the break to be over.

The Chinese commentators were clearly hoping for the Kings to win. You can tell because when the Rangers had the puck close to the Kings net, centering in front or past Quick, they said "be careful" or "dangerous". But when the Kings had chances, they said "good opportunity". The commentators called out, multiple times, players for their dives. And on the controversial play, they argued that, though it probably should have been a penalty, it happened too fast so refs could not be blamed for missing it.

Anyway, being able to see both today was fascinating for the sake of comparison.

Is the commentary in English or Chinese?

On CCTV? The commentary is done in Chinese. You can tell the guys speak English... a few times a game, they can't think of what something is called in Chinese or forget what sort of made up translation they are using for someone's name... so they just break into using an English word or pronunciation of a name.

Actually yes... but not from the Panda. There's this fast food place called Real Kungfu with a Bruce Lee inspired logo. http://www.zkungfu.com/ Food is not much better than Panda Express, which is disappointing given where we are. But I still go there occasionally because I love the logo. :p

OK, time for Food Porn. Tell us about the Dim Sum there, slowly, and with as much verbosity as you can provide.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.
