Remember when there wasn't glasses between the fans and the bench?
Been meaning to find my way to this site for a while now. I have been a King fan since I was 5 when a certain #99 came to town. I've been hooked ever since. I grew up playing (my Dad is from Chicago and introduced me). I think at first I just really liked the idea of wearing all the gear, but eventually the sport became a passion. I play every now and again to remind myself of how much better I used to be, but mostly I get my trills of the game from the seats now. As of last year I share seats with a group of other guys. Couldn't be happier to have jumped in on tickets at the most ideal time. Some of my favorites:
Favorite player: Bernie Nicholls (hence the S/N). Mostly for the player, partially for the twitter account.
Favorite Moment: Deadmarsh's goal to eliminate the Red Wings in 2001 and Bob Miller's call that goes with it. Bob sounds like he is announcing the death of the Wicked Witch in that call as Osgood lays on his back defeated. Last year's run was great, but as a Kings fan over the years I've learned to celebrate the small moments as much as the big ones, mostly because we haven't had too many big ones.
Favorite King I've met: Before game 4 of the finals last year I happened to be down by the railing where Bob and Jim do their pre-game hit. As they were standing around waiting I told Mr. Miller that I first met him in a sporting goods store over 20 years before where he and Luc were signing autographs. I remember being very nervous to meet Luc (I was maybe 7 at the time) and Bob calmed me right down so I could get a picture and autograph. I then asked him who was going to drop the ceremonial first puck for game 4 after Gretzky had done it for game 3. He said "I don't know who could possibly follow Gretzky." I said I can think of someone as I pointed to him. He shook his head no humbly and I said well Mr. Miller when they win I'll be thinking of you. We may have a part of this but of everyone who has been through all of this you deserve it more than anyone. So my favorite King is Bob Miller because God knows that just about everyone else that was involved with the Kings has left the organization at some point but he stayed with it and he got his reward.
Favorite Enemies- Red Wings fans (most couldn't point Detroit out on a map), Mike Smith & Shane Doan (for their ridiculous behavior last year), Rob Blake (For leaving us high and dry in 2001) & Theo Flurry (his abuse story aside, he was the definition of a pest).
I consider myself a good fan. I know a decent (but not obsessive) about the team. I show up on time, don't use the restroom during the period if I can avoid it (and if I during a timeout only) and try to be courteous to the other fans in the area. I don't own a jersey, you can see in my face who I'm cheering for. I follow all the blogs (Mayor, Half, All The Kings Men Podcast, these boards, etc) and read all the beat writers as well. I take pride in the fact that Kings fan are generally more knowledgeable than our sunny locale counterparts (READ Ducks fans are gross). Looking forward to meeting some of the other great Kings fans and sharing and learning about what everyone else knows. Go Kings Go!
