Hi FlamesFan51,
Rent a car and get out of the immediate airport area! There is nothing to do there, and it's kind of a shady area. The only people walking on Century Bl will be office workers on their lunch break, and touristsl!
***Close things to do in the South Bay (super close to the airport) are:
See the Canadiens practice (at the Kings practice rink, Toyota Sports Center).

Grab a pizza at Valentnos.

Then hit Redondo Beach Pier.

***Things to do in the Westside are:
Grab a killer pastrami and fries at Johnnie's.
Johnnie's Pastrami, Culver City, CA : reviews
About 15 bucks for a pastrami and fries. A little expensive, but GOOD!
OR
You can grab some Mexican food at Tito's Tacos (which is directly behind Johnnie's, to the right)

I like the tacos and the salsa is not hot! Cheaper than Johnnie's for sure! Can't go wrong with either!
Then hit up Santa Monica Pier.
Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica, CA : reviews
There is an arcade and roller coaster there. It's fun for kids... young and old!
Two blocks to the east of the pier is the Third Street Promenade. Lots of shops, restaurants, people, and homeless to check out.
***Things to do in Hollywood are:
Go see Grauman's Chinese Theater (and lots of tourists).
Mann Grauman's Chinese, Hollywood, CA : reviews
An intersting mix of people here, loads of tourists. There's even sightseeing bus tours available. Kind of a b**** to get there, though! I'd try to stick to the streets. Maybe take LaBrea Ave all the way to Hollywood Bl (then you can really tell your friends that you've "SEEN" LA).
---Try parking in the underground parking lot on Sycamore Ave just south of Hollywood Bl (first building on the right). Sycamore is 1 block east of LaBrea.
Then hit up a club/show at night.

Sorry, I'm too old for any recommendations!
Traffic usually sucks getting back to the airport on the 405 freeway from about 3-6pm (especially on Friday)... but that's the way it is. Also carry a few bucks in quarters for any parking meters you might run into. City of LA is always writing tickets...especially in Hollywood!
Oh yeah, I like horse racing. Santa Anita is running tomorrow and the San Gabriel Mountains make a great background for a day at the races... especially on a clear day! Just seems very "California" to me.

Enjoy your day in LA and have a good time!
Hope these suggestions help!
