LA Times says we're close to a deal with Torre
"Close to a deal," means precisely jack ****.
Until we've signed Torre (everything but the LA Times is saying he's still undecided), we are officially without a manager.
We'd better hope Torre signs or it could end up being just like post-season '05 again while we search (and search and search and search and thank the LORD the Reds already signed ****ing Dusty Baker) for a new manager. In the mean-time, lots of high-talent FAs will want to come to a managerless ballclub, right?
Personally, I think it's a pretty chicken**** move by McCourt and Colletti after signing a guy to an extension and saying "He's our manager," after the season ended.

Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Bullets are cheap. Life is priceless.
The Dodgers exercised Little's 08' option in March. That was after a decent year in 06'. Based on his crappy managing this past year, I don't blame McCourt for making the move.
When you have a chance to sign a manager like Torre, you do it.
No need for McCourt to get touchy-feely.
Bottom line, the Dodgers are better off with Torre than Little.
The Dodgers are only better off with Torre if they sign Torre. Until there's a press-con announcing it, I'm not going to say its a done deal.
McCourt now needs to put up. Because if he doesn't get a deal done with Torre and he ends up going somewhere else, this team is ****ed.

As I said last night, where there is smoke there is fire. There are way too many reports of Torre being the next manager for it not to happen. Especially now that Grady has "stepped down."
As far as it being chicken ****, well what did you expect management to say? There is only one answer to that question whether it be a lie or the truth. They can't exactly say "well he is our manager now but who knows in a few weeks." This happens all of the time. Grady should be happy that he is going to get a paycheck for an extension he didn't deserve.
Back to Torre. I don't really think a manager on a baseball team does a whole lot to help his team win. I just think a poor manager can prevent a team from winning games it should. Last season falls on Ned more than anybody but there were way too many issues with the lineups and clubhouse drama than there needed to be. That, for the most part, falls on Grittle.
I wouldn't mind having Mattingly as Plan C (seeing as Plan A was Girardi and Plan B is Torre).
Exactly, I think managers tend to be a bit overrated. Poor managers lose games for their teams. And good managers don't. In the end, it all comes down to the players. You can say that about all sports but in football, hockey, and basketball(especially football) there's a ton of game planning that goes into a game as well as practice. You don't really do those types of things in baseball.
But yea, I mean I'd be in favor of Torre, the main thing is he's not an idiot. He's worked with and had success with young players in the past(Jeter, Williams, Posada, Rivera, etc.), and he brings a lot of legitimacy to the organization. FAs are far more likely to sign here if Torre is around that any other manager I think.
