    Baseball America chat wrap

Joe (Billings, MT): How does the saga in LA affect Kemp, Ethier, Loney, and LaRoche? Who plays if/when Torre is hired and will the Dodgers trade LaRoche if they sign ARod?

SportsNation Jim Callis: Torre didn't break in a lot of young players with the Yankees, so it will be something he hasn't dealt with in a while. I still can't see the Dodgers signing A-Rod, because I think they'd be better off playing LaRoche and using the A-Rod money elsewhere. But if they do sign him, yes, I think you'll see LaRoche traded because he's very marketable.
Craig (PA): Do you think Don Mattingly being with the Dodgers would help or hurt Preston's progress with the club?

SportsNation Jim Callis: I don't think it would be much of a factor. Mattingly had a very rough year in 2007, and having his father around in the organization (or not) is the least of his concerns. He has to get a lot better offensively or defensively, regardless of his bloodlines.
Grady Little playing with Grandkids: McDonald or Elbert? Greg Miller or Justin Orendorf?

SportsNation Jim Callis: Elbert and Orenduff. Let the lightning round commence!
Joe Torre: Dodger SS in 2009? Hu or Furcal?

    SportsNation Jim Callis: Hu.

It's pretty amazing that there is a legitimate chance the Dodgers could have an all homegrown infield in 2008 (Loney, Abreu, Hu, LaRoche), and potentially 7 out of 8 fielders with Martin behind the plate and Kemp and Ethier (he wasn't drafted by LA, but made his debut with LA) in the OF with Pierre. This scenario probably isn't the most likely, but it's been a long time since it was even close to possible.

Yup, I'm pretty sure Furcal's contract ends this year, I think he only signed like a three year deal. Very possible Hu takes over for him next season.

Not to mention a few arms. Billingsley, Meloan, and Broxton for sure. Kershaw in 09(I don't want him rushed!). Plus some wild cards like Elbert and McDonald.

LOL, I meant it as a joke ("Who's on first" skit).

But I do agree that Hu will be playing short next season, kid looks solid!

    Keith Law chat wrap

Art (London): I keep reading rumors of a big shake-up in the LA front offices.... any chance they're crazy/stupid enough to let Logan White go? And if so would it take 5 or 10 minutes for him to find a new job?

SportsNation Keith Law: (1:29 PM ET ) 30 seconds. I'm surprised he wasn't invited to interview for more GM openings; he's got a great track record and very good presence. I've read those rumors, but I don't hear any chatter within the industry. That owner has an itchy trigger finger, though - look at how short a leash he gave Depodesta and Little
Paddy (St. Louis, MO): Hey Klaw, Marvel or DC? And how do you think the Dodger kids will do under Torre?

SportsNation Keith Law: (1:37 PM ET ) Not a comic books guy. If Torre is handed a roster with set roles - "Joe, James Loney is your first baseman" - they'll do fine. I worry that given choices, he'll choose the veteran over the rookie, especially if the rookie struggles. I think Matt Kemp is a superstar, but he's raw and his pitch recognition isn't great, so if he hits .150 in April I wouldn't be surprised.
Chris (San Diego): What about a Ian Kennedy for Andy Laroche trade?

SportsNation Keith Law: (1:56 PM ET ) If I'm the Yankees I do that in a heartbeat. Not sure that the Dodgers would trade LaRoche for a kid, although Torre might lobby for Kennedy since he knows him.
Mick(NYC): Where can I find your top 25 non-fiction list? Do you think Torre would correctly use veterans like Kent & Nomar in Dodgertown?

SportsNation Keith Law: (2:02 PM ET ) Lot of requests for that list - it's here: http://www.meadowparty.com/blog/?p=77. I worry about Torre using veterans instead of the kids. Nomar looks like he's toast, and Kent can't play 2b to save his life - so does Loney have to look over his shoulder if he doesn't get off to a hot start?
Erik (GA): OK so if the Dodgers don't sign A-Rod or Lowell, who is the stop gap to LaRoche at third this time?

SportsNation Keith Law: (2:21 PM ET ) I would just give the kid the job on Opening Day and tell him it's his for the season.
    Nick (NY): Kershaw/LaRoche/Kemp for Bedard?

SportsNation Keith Law: (3:05 PM ET ) That would certainly get it done. I would say it's too much for the Dodgers, but if they've decided they're going veteran...
Nick (LA): What's the outlook on Greg Miller?

SportsNation Keith Law: (3:09 PM ET ) I think he's cooked. Walked over a man an inning this year, velocity down, lots of injuries in his history.
mark z (long island): can you tell me about Laroche? He any good? I have co-worker that says hes the next 3bman after the dodgers sign arod...thoughts?

SportsNation Keith Law: (3:34 PM ET ) Walks and power with adequate defense, but he might be just a .260-.270 hitter. I like him quite a bit, and I can't get why the Dodgers have decided that a handful of at bats is enough to decide he's done.

They bought out Wolf today. Naturally, they still expect to negotiate with him as a free agent.

He's supposed to be ready to go for Spring Training. I say they should try to keep him around. You can never have too many pitchers, let alone starting lefties. And I don't imagine he'll command a huge price on the FA market, so he could be a good and relatively-inexpensive re-signing.
