Is that really a concern? I don't think its fair to pigeonhole Torre as a manager who favors veterans with speed.

Part of the reason he's always had veteran laden ball clubs is that's what Cashman has given him. He's worked in Melky Cabrera the last 2 years. Why wouldn't he play Ethier over Pierre.

Who are these speedy fast veteran players Torre has always favored. Only Kenny Lofton, who was there for a year and Tony Womack come to mind. Maybe Chuck Knoblauch? But even when he needed to be benched, Torre went with Shane Spencer.

I sure picked the right week to miss my first game of the year, glad I didn't have to see that. Been a long time since things have looked this bad for Denver.

Back to Los Dodgers, they definitely are not sold on LaRoche, since they know him better than anyone else in the league it would seem his injuries as a real source of concern.

I think it also has to do with the fact that 3B is the one position where we don't have a defined starter right now, so if an offensive upgrade is to be made somewhere they have to at least look at 3B as the place to do so.

Also, thought I'd drop this in. This is the "sponsor" of Kemp's page on baseball-reference.com:

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/k/kempma01.shtml

Bring Me Colletti's Head on a Plate sponsor(s) this page.

In honor of Ned Colletti and Grady Little, the men who sabotaged the Dodgers' 2007 season by propping up the decrepit carcasses of Juan Pierre and Luis Gonzalez so Bison Kemp and his 125 OPS+ could rot on the bench.

I like the addition of Blalock, if the price is right. Say we do sign Andruw Jones...and we can trade a package of Pierre, cash and something like Houlton/Kuo, etc. for Blalock....I like that. The Rangers are looking for a center fielder and pitching. They have a decent looking your prospect at third in Metcalf, so they don't need LaRoche.

That would give the Dodgers another season to ponder LaRoche. Blalock has an option for 2009, so they could keep him and spin LaRoche, or let him go and give LaRoche the spot full time in 2009.

    I like this lineup...

    Furcal - SS
    Martin - C
    Loney - 1B
    A. Jones - CF
    M. Kemp - RF
    H. Blalock -3B
    A. Ethier - LF
    Abreu/D. Young - 2B

If Kent comes back, slide him into the 5th spot and move everyone else down a peg. There are 5-6 potential 20+ home-run hitters in that lineup.

I hope you're right - I'd really like to see an outfield of Ethier, Kemp, and Andruw, and I"d hate to see Pierre blocking one of the kids. Supposedly Torre likes a set lineup and isn't so much into platooning players, so hopefully he'll pick Kemp and Ethier to be his regulars.

I don't know, I think it's the veteran bias rearing it's ugly head again. You'd think Colletti would be fine with giving LaRoche a shot since it's worked out elsewhere, but remember he gave Nomar a 2 year deal and was willing to have Loney learn OF or sit around in Vegas. So I'm not putting it Colletti, that he just wants to go the veteran route.

Makes sense but I don't think Hank Blalock is that guy. It doesn't make sense to have concerns about a player because of injuries. Then trade for someone that has had a recent history of some pretty bad injuries.

I'd rather give Laroche a shot than have Blalock at 3rd. Are they judging him based on the 93 at bats he had last season, because if so that's just not fair to him. Laroche has all the tools to be an excellent hitter, and he's also got a good throwing arm and decent glove.

I guess it really is the veteran bias of our brass. I mean, last season we did inexplicably send Loney to AAA, put Bills in the pen in favor of Tomko and Hendrickson, and forced Ethier and Kemp into a platoon by signing Gonzo and Pierre. Looks like Laroche will have wait for someone to get injured to get his shot.

Don't forget that Shea Hillenbrand was brought in last year to further block LaRoche. Sucks for Andy.

I agree, not sold on Blalock as the solution. I'd rather sign Jones and if they must trade young players for an upgrade somewhere, trade them for Haren or Bedard.
