If Schmidt can return to anything close to what he used to be this rotation is going to be really, really good. I think he'll have a relatively healthy 2008, I just don't know how his stuff will be.

I'm really hoping that Schmidt can be our Curt Schilling.

He said he's "fine with the outfield as it is," meaning Juan Pierre and Andre Ethier are more likely to open camp with Andruw Jones and Matt Kemp than one of them to be traded away. He said it wasn't out of "the realm of possibility" that Ethier could start ahead of Pierre.
    Good.

    Good.

That way, Pierre could make a nice and smooth transition onto the bench full-time. The highest paid bench guy since Jason Giambi!

    Keith Law chat wrap

Jim - Chavez Revine: Hey Klaw, love your work. In your opinion, do you think Jason Schmidt returns to form, or is the injury going to lag through the season. Also how would you grade our rotation accordingly?

SportsNation Keith Law: I'm guessing that a best-case scenario for Schmidt has him gaining strength as he goes, so I don't think he starts the year at 100%. Penny, Billingsley, Lowe, Kuroda, Schmidt, for now.
Rich (Toledo, OH): I think the Dodgers have excess pitching they could use to acquire another elite MLB player, like Brian Roberts. Do you think the Dodgers would or could trade Lowe, Loaiza, Kuo & Brazabon? Just see the Dodgers with too many pitchers.

SportsNation Keith Law: Not sure you can ever have too many pitchers, especially with Schmidt coming back from injury and Kuo always hurt. Elbert should be back as well in March. But to your question, I don't see them having the excess to go using it in a deal.
    Wendall (PA): Billingsley or Hughes?

    SportsNation Keith Law: Billingsley.

Schmidt will turn out to be the Dodgers version of Dan Cloutier.

I hope i'm wrong, but he might be too old to continue to comeback from injuries. Hopefully he's throwing harder than 85 mph in spring training.
