Ellis is awful. Another terrible signing.

With Aaron Hill off the market Ned overreacts and gives out another puzzling deal. Like Rivera, he was essentially given away by his team earlier this year. He's solid on defense, not spectacular and will be 35 next season. His bat is a stretch at the top of the order, he's really a #7 or 8 hitter at this point. He's a guy I would have been fine with for a 1 year deal later in the offseason once all other options had been exhausted. Would have preferred they make a run at Kelly Johnson before committing to a deal like this.

I think Ned did this deal today to try and hide it behind Kemp's extension, there will be far less outrage in the shadow of one of the brightest moments for the Dodgers in a long while.

Also, ex-Pirate Ryan Doumit apparently turned down a 1 year $3 million deal fro the Dodgers today. He has a good bat but is also considered sub-par defensively, more likely a fit on a team where he can split at-bats between C, 1B, and DH.

Yep. Ellis had a .288 OBP last season. Think about that for a second.

    I'd rather not.

I really, really, really hope Dee Gordon learns how to walk in Spring Training because with Dee hitting 1 and Ellis probably hitting 2, nobody is going to be on base for Either and Kemp.

An aging jabroni with no bat, just the cure for the Dodgers woes. [/sarcasm] Stop signing aging pieces of crap Ned.

Well, looks like the offense will remain a weakness in 2012. This isn't exactly an intimidating lineup:

    1. Gordon (He can fly on the bases, but not a great hitter and no patience at the plate)
    2. Ellis (Declining bat, under .300 OBP in 2011, more suited to hit 8th)
    3. Kemp (Most likely will not repeat his 2011 season, so even if he plays at an all-star level his 2012 numbers will most likely be a step down from 2011)
    4. Ethier (Must rebound and hit for power for LA to have any chance)
    5. Rivera (Will probably be below average for a #5 hitter/corner outfielder. I see Sands taking this spot by June)
    6. Loney (Has to hit more like the 2nd half than the first, Sands and Van Slyke waiting in the wings)
    7. Uribe (Even at his best he hits for only decent power with terrible OBP)
    8. Ellis/Treanor (Ellis has shown decent ability at the playe, Treanor is classic no-stick catcher)

This is not a playoff caliber lineup unless 2-3 guys significantly outperform their expectations. Ned will be looking for a bat as early as May, and with a new owner maybe they will have the ability to get one. Of course they' ll have to give up assets to do so, which really stings since two of the best bats of our era are out there right now with only draft pick compensation as the trade-off.

I don't see Ethier on this team in 2012. What's the market for an injury prone, all-star RF who can't hit lefties?
