Default George Horton leaving Cal State Fullerton

A shocker for Cal State Fullerton students, alumni, and Titan baseball fans. He'll be going to Oregon to restart their baseball program.

Good luck and a heavy hearted congratulations, George. I was worried when Auggie left, but you exceeded any standard that was left behind. Hopefully the new Titan coach will do as much.

I'm sure he got a ton of that Nike money.

Oregon=inspired by Oregon State. I'm sure they'll be a solid program in a few years.

Who takes over CSUF now? Any chance they'll get that guy at Irvine or is he too locked into that program?

Serrano has stated he won't leave UCI. I'm curious to see what would happen if he were actually offered the job.

Also, we lost Jason Gill. He was a fantastic recruiter for the program and was responsible for this years recruiting class which was ranked in the top 5.

Nike threw a lot of money at Horton and he took it. Money talks.

As for who takes over? Who knows. I've heard Wallach but who knows. Fall workouts are around the corner and classes have already started.

It will be interesting to see what the team will look like when it begins playing. It's a big lose to Fullerton for Horton to leave.

It maybe a new look Titans team. Hopefully I can get out to a couple of games this year. My last classes will end late so why not.

Yea, I'd imagine it would be pretty tough to leave UCI at this point only because he's got that program on the rise and it's really a great chance for Serrano to create his own legacy. UCI baseball is pretty much his baby, I'm guessing it would be tough to leave and I'm guessing that CSUF couldn't offer him THAT much more in terms of salary.

    .
Yea, we lost our head recruiter as well. Turtle Thomas, I believe he's taking over a program at some school in Florida. But a program like CSUF can recruit itself. It'll hurt, but it's not a killer blow, especially if they can hire an established coach fast.

Nike threw a lot of money at Horton and he took it. Money talks.
Hard to blame him. I read that they tripled his salary? Hard offer to pass up, plus like Serrano he gets to start a program from scratch with plenty of financial support.

The hiring of Horton and Gill leaves the Titans high and dry. Right now is a very important time for the 2008 recruits. My question is what's going on right now? Is anybody doing anything as far as recruiting goes.

This whole situation is a mess and has pissed off a lot of former players and alumni.

In the beginning they said Horton's contract very well make him the highest paid coach in college baseball. Talk about something very hard to pass up.

I wonder if the NCAA will relax some of the transfer rules for the 08 class. The new rule was supposed to come in this year, before baseball transfers never had to sit out a year. Now they do, wonder if they'll give a break to some of these kids.

From a selfish standpoint, I hope not. The 07 class will be fine. They're all in school and just want to play ball. The 08 class is a different story. I'm sure they're waiting to see who is hired. I've also heard Andy Lopez from UofA mentioned along with Wallach. Lopez's name was mentioned in an article.

I live in the dorms at CSUF, and everybody who really follows Titan Athletics is pretty depressed about this. There's a pretty good article in our newspaper The Daily Titan about it... http://media.www.dailytitan.com/medi...-2948630.shtml
