Looks like it's going to be a quiet trade deadline for the Dodgers
Loney, Kemp, Martin, Ethier, Billingsley, Kershaw & Broxton.
Don't disrupt the chemistry.
The Gonzalez talk was BS. Colletti already stated he wasn't trading anyone from his starting lineup and Gonzalez would've started with Loney. No thanks.
True but it goes back to the Halladay deal.
Halladay >>> Billingsley
Gonzalez >>> Loney
Too bad neither deal would be achieved straight-up. But Bills & Loney are big pieces of the core & I wouldn't support trading them + gutting the farm system just to improve a postion of relative strength (1B & #1 starter).
Yeah, except Gonzalez is only 2 years older than Loney, and is a much better upgrade at 1B than Halladay over Billingsley (who is an all star this year...Loney is a far cry from all star caliber right now).
Basically, Loney at 1B is no position of strength. He's 11th of 13 amongst 1B in OPS, 14th in VORP. Basically, right now, he's in the bottom half of NL first basemen, and that's a generous categorization.

Potential pitchers available during the waiver period:
Aaron Harang
Bronson Arroyo
Jon Garland
Doug Davis
Gil Meche
Vincente Padilla
Harang would be my first choice, Meche and Arroyo secondary targets.
I'm not going to argue whether Gonzalez is better than Loney. That's indisputable. But for Gonzalez to be traded to a division rival would cost a lot more than Loney. And I wouldn't have supported the kind of overpayment that would taken. Even if it was validated by a World Series appearance. Not if it meant mortgaging the next x number of years.
& I'm still not worried about Loney.
