Default KSPN 710 - Sports Radio

    LA Observed

    Changes at KSPN
Phil Wallace • Bio • Email
Earlier this week, KSPN 710 AM announced some changes to their station lineup. Gone are John Ireland and Kevin Kiley. The new lineup gives solo shows to Steve Mason, Dave Dameshek, and Brian Long. Both Sports By Brooks and Tom Hoffarth question whether this new schedule will be an improvement.

Maybe I'm the only person, but I'm really going to miss The Big Show with Steve Mason and John Ireland. I found the chemistry between Mason and Ireland to be some of the best in all of radio. Their show started in the 1990s on XTRA 690, when Jeanne Zelasko was their traffic and sports update girl. They were reunited on KSPN a few years ago, and had enjoyable segments that included Crossfire, BSI, and pre-1981 baseball trivia with Crazy Sue Kolinsky. The pair were also famous for soliciting some hysterical listener-made songs, and they were written up in Sports Illustrated for getting Michelle Tafoya to say various phrases on Monday Night Football by donating money to charity when she did.

There were times when I'd listen to The Big Show in my car that I was laughing so hard that I almost needed to pull over. It provided some fantastic radio entertainment. Sports by Brooks reports that KSPN was disappointed with Mason & Ireland's ratings, but it's awfully hard to build a listener base when large chunks of the show are regularly pre-empted for Angels and Clippers games. At least Mason is staying on with a show, and I hope it's as enjoyable with him alone as it was with Ireland.
So everyday I leave work at 4pm and I would turn on 710 to listen to the Big Show Interruption with Steve Mason and John Ireland. It created for an entertaining 20 minute ride home and they actually did a pretty good job of covering important topics of the day througout the rest of their show. I remember when Joe Torre was signed, they went without commercials and had great guests and good information.

Now I turn on the radio and I have to listen to this toolbox, Dave Dameshek. The guy does horrible material. You can hardly call it a sports talk show. Last night, I was listening on my way home from an appointment at 5pm and he was doing a sketch with a drunk Joe Namath and callers that were going up against "Drunk Joe" to see if they knew more about him, than him! Are you kidding me? On a day that Dontrelle Willis and Miggy are traded, this guy is doing a comedy sketch that has very little do with sports.

I couldn't stand him on the little I heard of him on Howard and I can't stand him on 710.

Does anybody else share my frustration?

remeber that jackass came from FM morning drive radio in LA( Adam Corolla) Hes a tool. He is more about HIM and less about the topic or the audience F HIM.Clearly this is all abvout saving money. I guess its back to John and Ken.

Fro being such a big adn important market for radio we sure have alot crappy shows in the air here and little variety, unless you know spanish or korean.

I listened to one segment on my quick 5 minute drive to Staples and he had "Shaq Fu". Yes, the overdone, overkilled, beaten to death Shaquille O'Neal impersonation. That's all I needed to listen to. I won't be listening.

As for The Big Show, on occasion they'd be interesting...but I just cannot stand Steve Mason. That guy's a douche and thinks he knows it all.
"Well, hey...listen...I LOVE movies, I'm a movies guy, you know...I'm an expert when it comes to that...", Sure you are.

I also won't miss his pounding on the desk to make a point and it's just ****ing irritating. So, if I had to choose between Dave Dameshek and the PMS show, I'd choose my ipod. Looks like I'll stick with that for now.

I got so tired of ESPN 710 making changes, and Fox Radio here in LA sucks (in my opinion!)

I now have XM radio and I'll never look back. I've got the MLB 24/7 talk channel, the national ESPN feed, national Fox Sports channel feed, and several other sports channels. Not to mention all the MLB games and college sports too! Way worth the subscription.

I would love to get XM but at this time, I just don't spend enough time in my car to justify the install and the monthly fee. My brother has it and it's awesome when we're driving up to Bishop to go fishing. Awesome programming with no commercials.

I know what you're saying about Steve Mason. He was somewhat of a Know-it-all but for the most part, it was entertaining. They had great guests and the talked about the topics instead of trying to be comedians all the time. If someone got traded, they were talking about it. If there was a conspiracy, they were exploring it. With this douce Dave, you get a Saturday Night Sketch without the comedy. Very dissapointing. I may have to write them an email to let them know how I feel.

    and NHL Home Ice XM204...

As far as 710, the Big Show was my favorite show on all of the local sports stations. However, ever since I became an XM subscriber (Dec. 06) with radios in my car, my wife's car, and at home I have not listened to local sports radio.

So, no I won't be missing them.

And I agree with SBU, L.A. Radio sucks.

Dameshek is the worst, I'll listen to Cowherd in the morning still but I sat through a week of DD hoping he'd get better and he didn't.

BTW I don't ****ing care if you were a writer for The Jimmy Kimmel show... I don't watch that either.

I do... Mason & Ireland made the 30 minute crawl from Van Nuys up to CSUN bearable.

The new show sucks, so I just listen to Foo Fighters' Greatest Hits (a.k.a. Kroq)

You forgot to mention the Red Hot Chicken Peckers every 20 minutes.
