True, but the same could be said last year at this time and then he was our biggest question mark the rest of the way. By the playoffs he was coming out of the bullpen. Hopefully this year will be different and hopefully it will matter.

We are now 3/4 of the way through the season and Penny has been dominant the entire way. Last year Penny went to crap at the halfway point. Big difference.

It's very amusing though to see an unabashed LoDuca supporter knocking someone else for dropping off in the 2nd half.

It's got nothing to do with Lo Duca at this point. Penny has yet to pitch well in an important game for us, that's a fact. I have nothing against him, he's our best starter, he just needs to pitch better down the stretch. Like I said, I hope he does and I hope it matters.

Pitched well Friday. No ER. That was a pretty important game thus far.

Important meaning the end of the season and playoffs. One can make the case that they are all of equal importance beginning in April, that's another discussion. He's been great thus far this year, no argument there. I want to see him finish it, not unreasonable.

When you knock one guy for disappearing down the stretch and conveniently ignore another guy doing the exact same thing, you don't think that's a point of contention?

How many "important" games have we played in since he got there?

By your criterion every single Dodger pitcher hasn't done jack for us in almost 20 years except Jose Lima... which is just silly.

They are all of equal importance beginning in April. The games in April count the same in the standings as the ones in September.

A player's numbers over the entire year are much more important than just one month.

We're discussing the depth of the Dodger staff for this year and next, not the trade from three years ago. Therefore, to me Lo Duca is not relevant to the conversation.

The stretch run and playoffs of 2004 and 2006. You want to begin that with August 1, August 15, September 1, whatever, you still won't find many clutch outings from Penny in a Dodger uniform.

Actually all the starters but Penny stepped up pretty well last year at the end of the year. And Lima's game was a gem. :D

On a spreadsheet, yes. But the whole vibe around a game is different at the end of the year--the intensity of the opponent, crowd, etc. Intangibles that aren't measured in numbers. Penny beat the Yankees twice in the World Series for Florida, so I'm not saying he can't do it, he just hasn't done it for us yet. Here's hoping he does.

So is performance down the stretch important or is it not? Make up your mind and stay consistent.

Yes, he was obviously hurt in both those situations.

Bad second half or not, the Dodgers also don't sniff the playoffs without Penny last year, and aren't even in the discussion this year.

Lowe and Maddux were good. The 5-spot (Billingsley/Kuo) was mediocre. Penny and Hendrickson were bad.

And yes, Lima's game was a gem. But he's still not anywhere near a list of the most valuable Dodger pitchers since 1988, which was the point.

You do realize you have to win A LOT of games in April-August for the September games to have a "vibe," right?

Hopefully Bills keeps us in the game tonight.
I see that Tomko pitches tomorrow. Boy, isn't that depressing.

Where's Stults in this entire thing? As I recall, he shut The Mets down his last start... which is more than Lurch can say.

And I found this nice little tidbit on the Dodgers.com mailbag.

Just how badly hurt is Derek Lowe?
-- Neal E., Los Angeles, Calif.

Lowe prefers not to talk about it, because he takes very seriously the fact that he's a durable gamer. But he's pitching in occasional pain because of a hip injury that is believed to be a torn labrum and might require surgery unless he intends to pitch in pain the rest of his career. Jason Isringhausen had the same injury last year, underwent the arthroscopic operation in September and was ready to start this season, which has been one of his best. Lowe and Isringhausen talked about it when the Dodgers were in St. Louis over the weekend. The operation -- which involves repairing the labral tear and trimming the neck of the femur -- requires a five-month recovery, including the first month on crutches.
WHAT? That ****'s news to me!
